The author Tan has stated in her article ‘Mother Tongue’ that the English language
that a person uses must not be used to judge the intellect and intent of an individual
(Tongue, 2003). e She has stated that her mother uses limited English to interact with others,
but it does not act as a barrier. Tan has effectively captured how people have a misleading
illusion that poor English means poor intellectual level, but using broken English does not
mean that the knowledge, insight, intelligence and passion of a person is restricted. This
realization has encouraged Tan to write stories in all kinds of English languages that she
has learned throughout her life (Tongue, 2003) so that she can cater to the reading needs of
a diverse audience group.
