For this project I have chosen the topic of teen pregnancy. I am
focusing on Denton County in Texas for my research. Through my
initial research I learned of a new law that was adopted in November
2020 that for the first time in more than 2 decades required the
school board to adopt new minimum guidelines in the sex education
programs in schools. Sexual education in Texas is a requirement in
middle school and this program went into effect for the 2022 school
year and will now focus on:
• Anatomy, puberty, and reproduction
• Contraception, condoms, STI screenings, and treatment of STI's
• Abstinence
• Healthy relationships and sexual abuse
While teen pregnancy has been on the decline in recent years in
Denton County, I think that the implementation of this program will
greatly help in the reduction of unwanted teenage pregnancy, and
leading to healthier sexual health outcomes overall in an at risk
population.
