8-1 Discussion: Being an Anthropologist Every Day
The main concern of applied anthropology is to use the field to address societal issues and thereby
promote change. This field of anthropology is also known as practicing anthropology because it applies
what students learn in the classroom to actual real-world practice. Two non-academic careers that
anthropologists work in are: non-profit and community-based careers as well as corporate and business
careers (American Anthropological Association, n.d.).
Anthropologists are employed by non-governmental organizations to help in the design and
implementation of different programs, such as in development banks and international health
organizations. Many anthropologists work for community-based and local settings for non-profit
