2-2 Discussion: New Folks in Town
If I were talking with my relatives about the new folks in town, I would start off by asking if my relatives
have ever heard of the concept of culture. Culture is "sets of learned and patterned behaviors and
beliefs that a group of people views as reasonable, normal, and timeless" (MindEdge, Inc., 2016). I
would continue by stating that even though we may consider certain behaviors to be typical, other
people may have developed different beliefs and practices. We obviously have some things in common
with this other group, like it being normal to live in a home, drive vehicles, and go to school. In some
places these things might not be the norm. Another concept we should consider is called sub-culture
which is the "shared ideas and behaviors that are part of a larger culture" (MindEdge, Inc., 2016). We
should not judge them based on the norms and standards of our own sub-culture as all these things that
have been pointed out could very well be a part of their sub-culture.
They may assimilate into our culture as time goes on and they spend more time in our community. It is a
possibility that the mother was brought up in a society where it was considered to be abnormal to speak
