A regular annual report typically presents only basic financial
statements about the a Corporation. An ACFR, by contrast, presents a
wider variety of important information intended to help the reader
properly understand the basic statements. Columbia's includes a
budget and specifics on how much different government run entities
as well as any government supported entities. Corporate reports
seems to just show the basic financial statements only occasionally
showing specifics on how they are planning to spend the funds.
Another big difference is the different ways in which a Corporation
and Government receive funds. Corporations have income from
providing a service or good whereas Governments income is from
taxes so the way that they are reported and implemented are distinctly
different.
As this is the final assignment I want to say that I hope you are all doing
well. I know not many will read this but if you do then I hope you find
peace and comfort in the fact that no struggle is permanent and you
can only control what you do and your mindset.
The first thing I noticed was how the beginning of the report
introduced the elected officials and provided information about the
initiatives they are working on and also how resources are being used
around the city, such as economic developments and public safety.
The financial information provided in the ACFR is for educational
purposes versus that of a corporate report that may be aiming to
entice potential investors. The reason for this is because the
government doesn't raise capital for profit, but instead uses tax dollars
to provide for the common needs of the citizens. The ACFR is an
opportunity for governments to be transparent and accountable to its
citizens and show what funds they are receiving and what they are
doing with those funds.
