Book Summary
The book Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture was written by Walt Mueller. Its main
objective is to call attention the importance of being obedient to the Great Commission in this
crazy changing culture. Mueller writes “we don’t need any new ministry inventions. Rather, we
need to prayerfully reexamine the Scriptures to see Jesus and his apostles did ministry.”1 Indeed,
it is a challenging book that makes you struggle with some of the Mueller’s concepts and so he
gives us four truths to keep in mind as we go through the pages. Mueller writes about truth
number one “I’ve striven to be faithful to the written and incarnate Word.” Truth number two
“I’ve tried to avoid the traps of false optimism and habitual pessimism.” His third truth is the fact
that he is “critical of the “faith” we’re calling young people to” and the fourth truth is “this book
does not teach a method of evangelism”2
Divided in three sections this book is concise and clear about its mission. Being obedient
to God’s Great Commission in our time and minister and love the young people who are so
desperately crying out for help. The first section deals with analyzing the mission field, the
second section deals with making sure that the right steps are being taken to get into the current
culture and are we to approach it and the third section deals with this postmodern generation.3
In chapter two Mueller writes about recognizing the mission field that is right in our face.
“The postmodern mission field lies in the halls of our schools, on our churches and even in our
own homes!... The sad reality is that the life-shaping power of the postmodern worldview stands
in marked contrast to the increased ineffectiveness of the church to communicate God’s good

news and a distinctively Christian world and life view to today’s young people.”4 Mueller goes
onto to write three vital steps for the missionary work. Step one: Know the unchanging world.
“know the message-inside out and upside down”5 It is all about Jesus Christ the one who never
changes. His message is the very same message today as it was almost two-thousand years ago.
Step two: Know the youth and their microwave culture. “the message sender must know the
receiver, particularly how and what the receiver thinks.”6 Just because culture changes between
every generation, God’s Word never changes. In Matthew we read Heaven and earth will pass
away, but My words will by no means pass away. Matthew 24:35 (NKJV) Step three: Take the
unchanging message to this changing culture. This is “the ability and resolve to listen to two
voices at one time. To stand between the Word and the world in order to discover evermore of the
riches of Christ.”7 These three steps are a good start to make sure that one is getting ready to
complete the calling of the Great Commission. Go and make disciples of every nation (culture).
As one continues to turn the pages of this great book, we get to chapter five and in there
we find a clear understanding of what culture is so that we may be able to enter into is world and
be able to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in a language that they will understand clearly. There
are a few objective ingredients we must be familiar with if we want to be able to “enter” into
their world. For example: heroes and models, movies and television shows, language and slang,
dress and clothing style, piercings, tattoos, body markings (this is the one I have to be able to get
over with!), jobs, websites and food preferences to name a few8

Conclusion
The Great Commission remains the same, the great need to share the great news is as
strong as it ever was. This emerging generation is dealing with confusion and are being kept as
far as possible from who Jesus Christ really is. The church in the last line of defense, the last
opportunity this generation has to hear the true gospel of Christ. This book gives us enough
information and great ideas that as a church we can implement to have a better chance of
reaching out our kids, our youth, our future.

As I finish the book, I was mesmerized by how far behind I had become in comparison to
where this generation is at right now. The last section deals with this postmodern generation. In
Chapter nine we read: “Postmodern youth are crying for redemption. Sadly, the church all too
often allows their cries to go unanswered because of ignorance, busyness or even bigotry.”9
Guilty as charged! Yes! Sadly, the church has not done what the Great Commission has called on
her to do. Indeed! Guilty as charged! What can the church do to change its ways of dealing with
this postmodern culture? Mueller writes that if we follow Paul’s footsteps through Athens “will
assure that our method for sharing the gospel will advance rather than impede the life-changing
message the emerging generations so desperately need.”10
