1. Defining Culture
a. Enculturation
i. The process by which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and
values that enable them to be functioning members of a subculture
(socialization)
ii. How is it developed?
1. Role: The behavior expected from the status type of the individual
how they play their part in the culture. (ex: pacesetter)
2. Symbol: The practice or possession which signifies membership
into a certain status. (ex: tattoo, latest fashion)
3. Custom: Action carried on by tradition, enforced by the group. (ex:
paint sidewalk at graduation, go for pizza after church every week)
4. Fad: A short-lived, exciting or outrageous custom. If it stops it is a
fad, if it continues it becomes a custom. (ex: break dancing,
dabbing)
5. Trend: a current course of a group towards a style. A fad can
become a trend, then a trend a custom. (ex: wearing hats in the
building)
6. Style: Prevailing characteristics of a group with varied application.
(ex: Fashion)
b. Acculturation
i. The process whereby an alien (newcomer) learns appropriate behavior
when entering the host (target) culture to become a “neo-domestic”
(insider).
ii. Cognitive sources:
1. Twitter/insta/snapchat
2. Magazines/tabloids
3. School websites
iii. Surveys
1. Select population
2. Self-administered questionnaire
3. Specific answer options
4. Balance “I believe” with “I do” questions
5. Random sampling
6. Conclusions based upon the survey
iv. Experiential (qualitative research)
1. “heart knowledge” firsthand experience of the culture with all 5
senses
2. Your subjective impressions through participatory observations of
their natural activity

1. Evaluating culture by one’s own culture and behavioral norms
