Introduction
Defining a theology of worship for one’s self is not only necessary, it is the only way to
truly live what one believes. The word theology in an of itself can be a daunting word to many
Christians. It gives an ominous feeling of past liturgies and old corruption within the Church.
When all is said in done theology is nothing more than knowing God. It is the process of getting
to know the Creator, defining the role that an individual will allow God to play in their life, and
learning what it is that God says about Himself. These are basic foundations of theology that
every Bible-believing Christian must encounter, explore, and define for themselves. It is within
this determining of what one believes in God that will shape morals, ethics, relationships, and
how emotions are expressed. Dr. Don Ellsworth states that “our theology matters because it’s
about God and nothing matters more than God.”1
Whether a person is intentionally defining their beliefs or just thoughtless existing, they
still have a theology of worship. Although they may not understand what, why, or how they
worship they will worship and define their preferences, beliefs, and actions according to what
they know about God. Personally, God is the ultimate and divine Creator of the universe, who
fervently and relentlessly seeks to have an active relationship with every one of His children.
Knowing this aspect of God’s character reveals to this believer that God is willing, and desires,
to be known intimately. What does this all mean? It is necessary to independently explore the
revelations of God through His Word, marking the characteristics of not only God but the
individuals that He chose to live in a covenant relationship with.
