Summary of the Book
The primary goal of this book is to offer an insight into the various models for praying
together, which has led o positive outcomes among churches across the U.S. The authors argue
that the ability of religious leaders to mobilize people to pray could help in the transformation of
the world. The writers achieve their primary objective dividing the book into five distinctive
parts with each section covering multiple topics. The focus of the first part is on the provision of
an insight into an encounter adventure. The author provides a personal reflection relating to the
importance of learning how to pray as he did. He asserts that this book is useful for those
interested in seeking a long-term relationship with God. He uses Tom's discovery to discuss the
personal impact and the ability to experience God's presence.
The second part is about the start of an encounter. The focus is on the importance of have
effective pastoral leadership as the majority of the church members desire an increased emphasis
on prayer. The implication is that it may be challenging for the church's prayer life to rise beyond
the pastor's commitment and personal example. The third part discussed the fueling of the
encounter. The author uses James Hastings' scenario to illustrate how people could be praying
with the wrong motive. This section helps in outlining the need to avoid doing the right things
for the wrong reasons when praying. The church needs to maintain focus by seeking the face of
God first.
Fourth, the text outlined the vision for encountering the community. By illustrating the
case of Billy, the author was able to show the importance of collaboration when praying.
Individual's mindset and culture impact how Christians interpret Scriptures. Learning about how
to pray applies to group prayer experiences more than private. The last section is about ensuring
2
that the encounter is fresh. Some of the strategies proposed by Henderson to keep our encounter
fresh include the promotion of continuous prayer gatherings and avoiding some of the
hindrances, including lack of a foundation, faith, fervor, and poor instructions..
Strengths and Weaknesses
The primary advantage is that it provides a detailed illustration of the various models for
praying together and the strategies to adopt to become a prayer warrior and encourage others to
pray. Reading this book helps the reader to understand the various issues that Christians are
likely to face as they pray. The authors were successful in making the reader determine the
principles that influence how they pray and strategies to keep the encounter fresh. It helps in
addressing the current issues that face the majority of the Christians and Pastors. Over the past
years, the majority of the people have been complaining that God does not answer their prayers,
yet they have not been praying right. The authors successfully addressed the complex challenges
such as Christians are likely to encounter and how to handle them successfully. The arrangement
and structure of the chapters facilitate the reader to understand the content quickly. It starts with
the encounter adventure, the start of the adventure, fueling the encounter, vision for encountering
community, and how to keep the encounter fresh. The arrangement of the chapters and the flow
of the content make it easier for the reader to understand. It is also easier to follow through or
link the information from one section to the other.
On the other hand, the major weakness is that the author used short sub-titles, which
could be oversimplified. Therefore, the chapters may be less useful in addressing some of the
broad and do not have references to each other. Just as most of the books that focus on the prayer
subject, Henderson's book – Fresh Encounters – is likely to receive criticism due to the inability
3
to pin down definitions. Although there is a presentation of primary cases and illustrations, they
lack detailed explanations of how they relate to the subject under discussion. The reader can
understand the situation but may find it difficult to link it with the content the author discusses.
The book also lacks a comprehensive coverage of the topics.
Intended Audience and Purpose
Henderson aimed to provide personal reflection regarding approaches to adopt to foster
collaborative prayers and how to overcome the hindrances that could prevent a person from
keeping the encounter fresh. It seems that the author targets pastors and Christian leaders as the
primary audience despite including content for the general Christians or congregation. He states
that the majority of the pastors consider prayer as personal instead of group activity. He provides
an example of what it means to be a prayer warrior in the Christianity context. Throughout the
text, the author has focused on defining the factors that can harm the fresh encounter among
Christians. He has shown the pastors some of the things to adopt and those to avoid when
praying.
In addition to the author's success in discussing the primary purpose of the book
throughout the text, I think he was able to present the information and relate the examples
adequately to the target audience. Throughout the book, Henderson has used language and
illustrations that fit in the Christian context and, in some instances, referred to the Scriptures.
When a pastor reads this book, it is easier to connect information with Bible verses,
strengthening the meaning of the topics covered. For instance, when discussing the culture of
individuals, Henderson states that by subscribing to the individualistic prayers, both pastors and
4
Christians, in general, will be losing the New Testament conviction praying together before
learning to pray alone.
Comparison with Other Similar Works
Fresh Encounters.by Henderson have various similarities and differences with other
course materials. For example, it is similar to McIntosh's "Overcoming the Dark Side of
Leadership".in that they both discuss some of the factors that hinder leaders and Christians from
realizing the desired growth in their Christianity lives. The similarities in theme imply that both
texts cover almost the same subject and tone. Both books have the same chapter arrangements in
terms of structure and design, with each part having different topics. However, while "Fresh
Encounters".uses examples related to Christianity and the Christian worldview, "Overcoming the
Dark Side of Leadership"borrows leadership examples from the general business environment.
The authors use secular leaders' stories in his illustration of the people who have been unable to
overcome the dark side. It could be more appropriate to relate the book's content to leaders in the
Bible that faced the dark side and overcame it to relay the message to the intended audience..
The other book to relate with is Sandres'."Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence
For Every Believer.".The book is similar to.Fresh Encountersas it discusses the concept of
leadership and the challenges Christian leaders may encounter. Just as prayer, Spiritual leader
should be the guider and companion of each under-shepherd that serves in the service of the
Lord. Both authors were successful in developing their respective primary arguments and
relating it to the target audience. In contrast, there are some differences in the organization of the
chapters and the transition of the message. While.Fresh Encountersorganizes its content based
5
on different parts,."Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence For Every Believer".uses
multiple chapters that enable it to cover full content.
Recommending the Book
One of the reasons I will recommend this book to my friends is its ability to offer a
detailed explanation of various models for praying together. In addition to providing a detailed
description of the subject under discussion, they will be able to gain new knowledge about
prayers. Currently, the majority of people consider prayer as an individual practice. However, by
reading this book, they will understand the need to pray together. The author provides a link of
the book to Bible verse, making it objective in the content it covers. By reading it, they will be
able to understand what Jesus meant by "when two or three are gathered in His name, I will be in
the midst of them." Additionally, the majority of my friends aim at becoming religious leaders in
the future. This book will be a critical tool in guiding them about the best practices to adopt to
become successful. In the long run, it will be beneficial to the congregation as the members will
be able to select the best practices of the leader.
