Chapter 6 Reflection
When we started attending the church we are at now right before Covid hit there
was no pastoral board or any structure for organization. Considering there was only a
total of about fifty people that attended the church and 80% of them were family, there
did not seem to be a need for anyone else. After we were able to open the doors of the
church back up, we had a tremendous number of visitors that eventually became
members of the church. Since our attendance has increased to over 100 people on Sunday
morning, a deacon board was appointed to assist with all the decision making and to
make it a fair view across the board. This reduced the chance of a single family having
the final say so on important decisions and each person has the same vision of the church
that the pastor does. The deacons meet once a month to discuss financial plans, programs,
and events that are upcoming. We just recently started an outreach program and a food
pantry to help the homeless. However, it was only brought before the deacon board to
make the final decision of whether it was a go or not. The one thing I have noticed about
my church is they did not have an open-door concept. As I mentioned before the new
people were welcomed spiritually but not physically. They were not given the opportunity
to participate in the worship service or volunteer in any position. This is something that
has bothered me for quite some time because this is one of the main reasons I like small
churched versus other churches. Last month our deacon board made a unanimous
decision to appoint the children’s church teacher over all the children including youth and
nursery. This would consist of controlling the finances, snacks, event planning, and so
forth. The goal was to relieve the pastor of some of the responsibilities he has on him
however being that youth leader I believe it should have been discussed with myself and

the nursery worker. I may be looking at this the wrong way, but I pray that we don’t lose
sight of the Great Commission and not allow something as small as decision to cause
division in our church.
