Vicarious trauma refers to an occupational challenge for those individuals who serve and
volunteer in the areas of emergency medical services, law enforcement, rape, war, fatal
accidents, victim services, fire services, and related units following the constant exposure to
violence and trauma victims (Dombo & Gray, 2013). Any person working with survivors of such
cases is susceptible to the negative influence of the vicarious trauma effects. Some of the factors
increasing the employees' vulnerability include a challenge in speaking out their feelings, social
isolation, inadequate employee preparation, orientation, training, and supervision in their jobs.
The module's three main points are critical when handling individuals with vicarious trauma.
They include the self-care model, spiritual practices for the social worker, and meditation as a
spiritual practice.
A self-care model involves applying spiritual practices in addressing vicarious trauma
and minimizing burnout that can assist social workers in developing adaptive coping ways to the
events. The model outlines how the victim can help oneself deal with the effects of the trauma.
For instance, vicarious trauma victims based on the self-care model can undergo professional
training to receive self-care skills adopt self-care skills while striking a balance between work
and personal life. According to Dombo & Gray (2013), the self-care model's comprehensiveness
