It is vitally important for all Christians to be biblically sound in doctrine
and principles, otherwise we are ineffective in our ability to share the
significance of the gospel. It takes a believer being sound in scripture and
the application thereof, in order to live the life God has intended for us to
live. It also takes a strong knowledge of scripture to combat the ongoing
spiritual warfare that believers will encounter. Sound biblical knowledge
serves the purpose of preparation for such encounters, as Jesus Christ
showcased that ability throughout the New Testament.
########### Jesus showed sound biblical wisdom when being tempted by
Satan, Jesus combatted the attempts of Satan to misrepresent scripture
with scriptural verses of rebuke. In the exchange of verses back and forth,
three times Jesus rebuked and thwarted Satan’s attempt to deceive and
compromise Jesus’ work (Matthew 4:1-11). This is why it is important for
believers to have the same ability to know, understand, and apply
scripture because it will come in handy when dealing with the deceit, lies,
and temptations of this world. It is for this reason alone that believers
should equip themselves with head and heart knowledge of the Bible.
########### Another example of the importance of being biblically sound in the
knowledge of scripture is that it helps in being able to convey the truth
about who God is, how much He loves us all, and the promises that He has
in store for those who would believe upon Him. How are believers to
address the claims that God does not love, without the ability to speak to
the claim of John 3:16? What ways can believers speak to those who are
confused, lacking direction, or purpose, without calling out the truth that
resides in Jeremiah 29:11? Where can believers point to help those
seeking truth about life, death, and what lies after, without taking them to
John 11:25?
########### These are the reasons why it is vitally important for believers to
know the scriptures. It is so they can give an account for how those
scriptures changed their lives. It is so they can attest to the power and
authority that reside in God’s words to combat evil. It is to reveal how God
desires for all to know Him and to make Him known to all. It is so they can
have a portion of God with them always, leading the way.
