I am writing this letter to you to highlight how stress can have an impact on the
academic performance of students. The information is based on a few recent articles
that focus on variables like stress, anxiety and academic performance.
In the research study conducted by Akbar the primary objective to capture the impact
of anxiety on the academic performance of students. The research questions that
have been framed by the research team are ‘What is the impact of library anxiety on
the academic performance of university students’ and ‘What are the effects of
different forms of anxiety upon student’s academic output?’ A quantitative research
method has been adopted with a sample size of 416 individuals. The chief variables
of interest in the study are library anxiety, and academic output or academic
performance. The collected data have been analyzed using the SPSS software.
Statistical analysis has been conducted by computing mean and standard deviation
for capturing the different kinds of anxiety-related variables including library anxiety,
presentation anxiety, subject anxiety and exam anxiety. The conclusion of the study
has revealed that anxiety affects the thinking as well as behaviour of individuals. In
the case of university students, the level of anxiety intensifies because of the campus
environment. It can adversely affect their achievement in the academic setting .
The other research study that has been examined intends to explore the relationship
between stress and academic performance among medical students. The research
question that has been framed by the researchers revolves around the prevalence of
stress among medical students and its impact on their academic performance in the
Saudi Arabia context. A cross sectional study has been conducted and the quota
sampling technique has been adopted and the sample size of 1900 has been used for
the research purpose. The major variables of interest in the research study are stress
and other study variables like work, studying medicine, financial problems, sleeping
hours, living far away, medicine and symptoms and marriage. A number of statistical
tests have been performed by the researchers to analyze the collected data such as T-
test, ANOVA, as well as linear regression. The SPSS software was used for the
statistical analysis process. It has been concluded that there is a prevalence of stress
among undergraduates, and interns. Female undergraduates had severe stress. It
was also found that there existed a strong association between stress and academic
performance (Mahyuddin et al., 2018).
Both the articles that have been analyzed show that factors such as anxiety or stress
have a major impact on the academic performance of students. The findings that the
respective researchers have arrived at are streamlined in nature. When learners are
stressed or feel anxious their psychology gets affected which negatively impacts their
performance and achievement in the academic setting.
