Theology Critique & Application
Essay Name: Zachary Cushman (as it appears in Blackboard)
THEO 201- 003 (Fall 2019)
Date: 12/1/2021
I. The area of Theology (or Chapter title for Erickson) that I will be addressing is: Salvation
II. Briefly explain what this aspect of Theology teaches. (150 word minimum)
The theology of salvation teaches us various things regarding what salvation is,
how it can be attained, and why it needs to be obtained. According to Keathley (2004),
man is left hopeless when he only has his own resources but God in His grace allowed a
solution for us; salvation. Salvation itself is translated from the Greek word soter which
means savior. The only way to be saved from our destructive ways is through the
Savior of all mankind, the One who died for our sins even though He was sinless; Jesus
Christ. He atoned for us so we could have a chance to get into heaven instead of being
sent straight to hell for our corruption and sin. God has given us every chance to be
saved from eternal torment which we find in John 3:16 where He sent his Son to die for
us.
Christ speaks for us because we are separated from God through His holiness and our
sinfulness.
Word Count = 163 words.
III. Why is this aspect of theology important and relevant to people today? How can it
be applied in today’s world? (150 word minimum)

This is important today so mankind understands how to be saved from eternal
death. The world seems to grow more corrupt each passing day and the only way to be
saved from that is through faith in Christ. Without knowledge of salvation, ideas can also
be twisted or rewrote in order to trick people into believing the wrong thing. Even the
littlest facts should be understood as well as Hillman (2020) quotes Richard Sibbes
saying,
We see out of heavenly wisedom and experience he drawes them to two heads, all
good things to grace and peace. If there had been better things to be wished, he
would have wished them, but Grace and peace are the principal things. (p. 826)
The grace of God allows us peace in heaven. He could easily strike us down for our sins
but waits until the last moment because He loves us. Without knowing and spreading the
truth of salvation, that heavenly, unending love can and will go wasted on so many
hopeless souls.
Word Count = 170 words.
