As Christians, theology and the Bible have a lot of influence over how we choose to live
our lives. One area in particular that I believe can and should be affected by Biblical theology is
work. A main reason why people work is to make money to provide for themselves and for their
family. However, many people also work for other reasons such as for identity, self-fulfillment,
or to give themselves a purpose and meaning for life. Regarding why we work, and work ethic,
the Bible is very clear when it addresses this topic. Colossians 3:23-24 states, “Whatever you
do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you
will receive inheritance from the Lord as a reward”.1 This is one reference in the Bible where
God tells us that we are to work to please God. In the life of a Christian, the driving force for
why we decide to work should not be money, or a search for purpose; the purpose of work
should be to glorify God. In the “Sports and Theology ACE Interview”, Jeremy Treat says that
the gospel will give you a new purpose, identity and ethic.2 So many people today find their
identity in where they work, and what their occupation is. But that is not needed, because as
Christ followers our identity should come from Jesus Christ. We are created in the image of
Him; therefore work on earth is something we should do to please and glorify Him. God tells us
time and time again in the Bible that hard work will bring profit and blessings. Proverbs 14:23
states, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty”.3 So if you are
working hard for God through your work, than you will be blessed with what you need to
provide for yourself and your family. In conclusion, your identity should be found in Christ not
what you do/where you work, and the purpose of your work should not be for your own gain, but
the purpose should be to glorify and please God. And if you have a strong work ethic like the
