Introduction
In Genesis 1:1 we learn that God created the Heavens, Earth and everything within it; “It would
be on the sixth day of creation that brought forth one of the clearest demonstrations of God’s
creative power; God created man” (Original Creation of Man in the Image of God, p.1). When
God created Adam and Eve, he created them is his image (Genesis 1:26-27). “This means that
man is simply a reflection of God” (Original Creation of Man in the Image of God, p.2). God’s
instructions to Adam and Eve were to look after all the things that he created and each other;
since the very beginning it has been our duty to offer help to mankind. My goal in this paper is to
point out the importance of keeping a mind like Christ in your chosen career field; keeping a
mind like Christ will allow you to represent the proper image of God as you are helping his
people.
Example 1
It is important that we remember that when we were created, it was from a place of love and that
love which was given to us should be shared when we are interacting with others; this not only
applies to our personal lives, but also for our chosen career fields. “Social Work is a profession
concerned with helping, individuals, families, groups and communities enhance their individual
and collective well-being; it aims to help people develop their skills and their ability to use their
own resources and those of the community to resolve problems” (www.casw-acts.ca). Many
Social workers deal with people who are hurting and they often are the individuals who are
responsible for offering guidance; anyone choosing this career field needs to be passionate and
sincere about helping God’s people find their way and or overcome any obstacles they may be
faced with. Philippians 2:4 says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to
the interests of others. The duties involved with being a social worker reminds me of the works
of Christ; Social Workers are known to, feed the hungry, cloth the poor, give shelter to the
homeless, helping the sick and continuously giving unselfishly; therefore when entering this field
you need to always have the same compassion and love that God has for all of mankind.
Example 2
Having love for others and a passion for helping them are two of the necessary skills that social
workers need, but having faith also goes a long way. Social workers have a rewarding career, but
the field does come with a lot of emotional drain; however, “As we live by faith, God is able to
use us and cause us to grow in grace” (Towns, 1983). Faith is a tool that social workers need, it
can help maintain the mental strength and give you the balance that is needed because you will
be continuously serving people that are hurting. I have yet to begin my career as a social worker,
but I do work with social workers and the population that we provide help to are those who have
encountered challenging circumstances in life. These circumstances have left them vulnerable,
broken and lost. I see firsthand that this is the one field where you will have many highs and
lows. You are often the one who will encourage those who are feeling discouraged and at the
same time you are the person who will cheer for them when they accomplish goals, it can be an
emotional rollercoaster because it’s a field that requires you to be heavily involved with helping
others solve their problems, therefore your faith can help motivate and encourage your patients
or clients. I have learned that having faith is important and must remain at the forefront of your
mind if you are a social worker; that way you will always remember that God will be the one
who will keep you grounded because you are just a vessel that he is using to help his people.
Philippians 2:13 says, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do
what pleases him.”
Conclusion
In our careers we will encounter all of mankind. Some of those who we will encounter will have
similar worldviews and others will differ. We must remember to not pass judgement against
those who we serve, but instead focus on the fact that we all are created in the image of God and
should see people the way God would see them. Colossian 3:23-24 tells us to, “Work willingly
at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember
that the Lord will give you and inheritance as your reward and that master you are serving is
Christ.” We should also view it in from this perspective, “The life of Jesus Christ makes clear
the duty and privilege we have to serve our brothers and sisters on earth” (www.mormon.org).
