Biblical Metanarrative Essay
In the biblical metanarrative there are different words we can use to help us explain the
four major parts. The creation, fall, redemption, and new creation are all apart of God’s words.
People have lived through three of the four major parts. The glory of God and hope are two
important aspects when looking at the biblical metanarrative. We need to glorify the Lord and let
him know that he has done an amazing job with everything that was thrown at him. He created a
world without sin, yet sin was created. Even after sin was created, he still gave humans a change
to redeem themselves through the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We were given hope that the world
can change. God can create miracles, like bring Jesus back to life after he had been killed. People
were healed and the blind man could see again. Without hope what is the point of life? We need
hope to keep us going day by day.
Biblical Metanarrative
Throughout the bible is the Biblical metanarrative that consists of four parts. There is the
creation, fall, redemption, and new creation. When God started creating the world, he made the
heavens and the earth (Gensis 1:1). Not only that but he also created Adam and then Eve out of
Adams rib (Genesis 2:22). When they decided to eat from the one tree that was forbidden, sin
was created. This led to the fall of God’s creation. Later throughout time the virgin Mary
conceived a baby (Jesus). People knew that Jesus was a miracle and that he was meant for
remarkable things in the world. He started living the life of God and spreading the world that he
was real. People did not like that he spread the word of God, so he was sentenced to death on the
cross. He died that day for all our sins, he was our redemption. From there it was up to us to live
a life of God and not give in to the temptations of the devil. At the end of the bible, it goes on to
talk about the new creation. The new creation of the world will happen when God comes to take
3
all his people home. A new heaven and earth will be created, once again we will be able to live
eternally with God (Revelation 21:21).
Glory of God in the Biblical Metanarrative
The Glory of God started when he created the world that we live in today. He gave us everything
we could ever need. He created Adam and Eve in a world that was sin free. That was short lived
when Eve listened to what the serpent had said to her, and she ate the one fruit that God had
forbidden (Genesis 3). She then got Adam to take a bite of the fruit. This led to the fall of God’s
creation. This led to Adam and Eve having to leave the Garden of Eden and having to live in a
world where sin was now created. Even though he punished them and forbade them to leave the
garden he still gave them children. Years later, the glory of God was brought to us in the form of
a baby when Jesus was born. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government,
will be on his shoulders. And he will be called wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting
father, price of peace (NIV, 2001, Isaiah 9:6).” When Jesus was older, he went around spreading
the word of God. He told people that God was real and that we should believe. Even when he
knew he was about to be crucified he prayed for his disciples and answered the question of truth
(Etzel & Gutierrez, 2015). God gave us a chance at redemption when Jesus died on the cross for
our sins. In life we cannot just depend on the general salvation to get us to an eternity with God,
we must find out salvation through Jesus Christ (Etzel & Gutierrez, 2015). We need this
salvation for when the new world (heavens and earth) is created. The day that God comes back to
take the people that serve him and creates a new world where there is no sin once again. It is up
to the people in the world today to spread the Glory of God.
Hope in the Biblical Narrative
4
In the beginning of creation there was no need for hope. Adam and Eve were created into a
perfect world without sin. Once they sinned hope was lost. There was a great amount of sin in
the world after Adam and Eve were banished. Siblings killed one another, even neighbors. Jesus
gave the world hope when he was born. He went around to different towns spreading the words
of God. God worked his healing powers through Jesus Christ. He healed the sick and in John
9:1-12 he heals the blind man, so that once again he can see. He was spreading the hope that
people would once again believe in the Lord. We are all tempted by the devil, even Jesus at one
point in his life was tempted. We must be ready, we must resist the devil, and stand firm in our
faith (Etzel & Small, 2016). When we do these three things as Jesus did, we can keep our faith
and hope in the Lord. Even during the hardest times in life, when we have hope, anything is
possible. God has his way of miracles happen. When Jesus rose from the dead, he brought back
the hope the society needed. More people believed that God was real and that miracles can
happen. Now with hope we pray that God takes us with him when he comes to take his people
back for the new creation. We must abide by his words so that our hopes and prayers can be
answered. Hope is the one thing that can keep people pushing through day by day. Hope can
change lives.
As you can see, there are four important aspects of the biblical metanarrative. Without any of
them there would not be a world today. God never meant for there to be sin, but it happened. We
must keep our hope and faith through all the temptations thrown at us. Hope can get you through
day by day when the world seems like it has fallen apart. Hope that God will one day be back to
take us to a new creation. A place where there is no sin, and we can spend an eternity with God.
We should glorify God for everything that he has created and given us. Whether we always
realize it or not God has given us everything we need to survive. It is up to us to make the best of
5
everything that we are given in life. When things start to go downhill, we pray that God helps us
out of the situation and hope for better days.
