Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. What points of application can be made using the “Four Questions for
Application?” State and explain 1 point of application for each of these four
questions. Your explanation for each of these points should be 1 paragraph
(150-300 words) in length.
1. The question of duty
In Acts 9:36-43, we encounter the question of duty right away with Tabitha. We
know that she was kind and did charity work. This scripture tells us that she was
known as Dorcas in the town of Joppa or today it is known as Jaffa. Tabitha was a
very kind woman who did great deeds. Since she had Jesus in her heart, she
always helped her friends, she made them clothes without charging them. When
Tabitha died, Peter who was an apostle of Jesus was near by and was asked to
come and pray over Tabitha, she was then raised from the dead. In this scenario,
we also discover that Peter had a responsibility to gain souls for Christ, pray
for the people, and raise the dead. Peter's act of kneeling down
demonstrates humility, indicating that he valued his labor. We learn about
the roles that humans should play in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and
supporting our fellow humans from the Bible.
2. The question of character
In regards to character in Acts 9:36-43, we read that everyone respected Tabitha
and she was well loved by her people. She left a legacy to her town of Joppa.
Tabitha was a woman who devoted her entire life to Christ. She was selfless. We
can take this information just from reading her story. Her story is an important
story in Acts. Just having a normal view on religion and being peaceful about it
and value others religions. If we do good works for example doing a random act
of kind then this ensures that we are able to live a full life of happiness. People
will feel more valued each and every day. If you have faith then understanding
your actions must be there, you should be respectful of others when they want to
pray. Being a prayerful person just like tabitha is essential when being in the
presence of God, this goes back to why Tabitha’s story is so important to
understand. We do

not only pray to ask for God’s help for ourselves but we pray to help others or
we just need to pray to thank God for always looking out for us. Tabitha was
faced by death and praying is very important to this. Tabitha overcame death
because Peter prayed over her and she was raised from the dead.
3. The question of goals
The question of goals comes into play when we talk about Peter. He was
devoted to his work and he was devoted to Jesus. He was Jesus’ friend. He
was also Jesus’ disciple. We know this by reading the scriptures. He was also
dedicated to his ministry to hopefully win souls for Jesus. One of his goals
was to carry on his devotion and ministry of Jesus. Peter had shown this
because even though he was in Lydda ministering the people there, he still
went to help Tabitha. He went to Joppa which was another town over. He
was told about Tabitha’s death while he was still in Lydda. Peter helped
Tabitha because she was a servant of God and this is the reason why he
came and raised her from the dead. This is clear to us that he was up to this
because he had God by his side. After raising Tabitha, also known as Dorcus
to her community, from the dead, he stayed with her and made sure she
was okay. From the Bible, it tells us that he stayed and ministered the town
of Joppa for a while, this was after he told the followers the good news that
Tabitha was alive and well. Peter’s love and values are for the work of Christ
and it was not comparable to anything else.
4. The question of discernment
This part was a little harder for me to write. In Acts 9:36-43, we know of
Tabitha and she comes in the perspective of God by helping others. It says
in our book, “The question of discernment deals with separating truth from
error. It is the ability to identify that which is biblical truth and embrace it
(Cartwright, pg. 194)”. We know the truth in Tabitha’s ways were real. We
know that she wanted to follow Jesus and that she devoted herself to him by
helping others and doing charity work. Do we know if we had any errors?
We don’t because the story doesn’t tell us this. We do know that we can
separate truth from error by not lying and always doing the right thing like
Tabitha did. Peter then came and helped her which was the right thing to do.
