One should honor God with their bodies. In Matthew 6:21 (The New International
Version), Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” If God comes
first, all other things will fall away. An addiction can be an all-consuming situation with
substances being the treasure.
Every person will process substances differently. Pharmacokinetics, the affect that time
has on a drug in the body, can be affected by a person’s absorption rate (Doweiko, 2019). The
absorption rate is in turn affected by the place of administration and the form of administration
(Doweiko, 2019). There are many different factors that can alter the reaction of a substance and
cause every person’s reaction to be unique. Pharmacodynamics, the strength and duration of the
substances’ effect on a person, will be influenced by distribution, transport, biotransformation,
and elimination (Doweiko, 2019). For instance, certain substances that are lipid-soluble will
become focused in the brain (Doweiko, 2019).
Some substances can even hurt those that are in the vicinity of the abuser, such as
nicotine. Second-hand smoke can be devastating for those that are subjected to it. Second-hand
smoke can cause lung cancer, can increase heart disease, asthma, colds, and ear infections in the
people who are innocent by-standers (Clinton & Scalise, 2013). Addiction is a selfish thing and
the abuser is not thinking of those they are harming around them.
