Introduction:
As a sports management graduate student aspiring to become an Athletic Director, I recognize
the significance of economic and financial competence in the sports industry. The role of an
Athletic Director is multifaceted, involving various responsibilities such as managing budgets,
allocating resources, and ensuring the overall financial health of an athletic department. To excel
in this field, I have established three personal goals and objectives that align with the importance
of economic and financial competence in my role as an Athletic Director. The Athletic Director is
more then managing the sports, they need to be like a CEOs of a company and be visionary
because people like to think in the future. (Maciaszek, 2013) I will need to learn from all the
classes that I am taking to develop those skills and have a successful athletic program.
Goal 1: Develop a Comprehensive Understanding of Financial Management in Athletics
Objective: To complete courses in financial management specific to athletics, such as budgeting,
revenue generation, and expense control, with a grade of 'A' or higher.
Rationale: A fundamental understanding of financial management is essential for any Athletic
Director. This knowledge will enable me to efficiently allocate resources, make informed
decisions, and ensure the fiscal health of the athletic department. I can systematically acquire the
necessary financial expertise by setting a specific academic goal.
Goal 2: Gain Practical Experience in Athletic Department Budgeting and Financial Planning
Objective: Continuing as the Athletic Director at Oasis Christian Academy, I can actively
participate in budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation for the athletic programs.
Rationale: While academic knowledge is crucial, practical experience is equally important. This
goal will provide hands-on exposure to the real-world challenges of managing the finances of an
athletic department. It will enable me to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting,
enhance my problem-solving skills, and establish connections within the industry.
Goal 3: Establish a Network of Industry Professionals with Financial Expertise
Objective: Attend and actively engage in sports management conferences, seminars, and
networking events focused on financial competence, with a goal of connecting with at least three
professionals who possess expertise in sports finance.
Rationale: Networking is an invaluable resource in the sports industry. Building relationships
with individuals experienced in sports finance will provide me with mentors and peers who can
offer insights, advice, and potential opportunities for growth. It is essential to tap into the
knowledge and experience of those who have successfully navigated the economic challenges of
the field.
In summary, these three goals and objectives are tightly connected to the role of an Athletic
Director and the significance of economic and financial competence. (Greenberg & Evrard,
2016) Through comprehensive financial education, practical experience, and industry
networking, I will be better equipped to excel in this role. These goals support my purpose in this
course and align with my overarching objectives in my master's degree program in Sport
Management.
As an Athletic Director, my primary responsibilities will involve overseeing the athletic
department's financial health, ensuring equitable allocation of resources, and making data-driven
decisions. These goals empower me with the skills and experience needed to excel in this role,
ultimately contributing to the success and sustainability of the athletic programs under my
supervision. Furthermore, they are integral to my master's degree program, as they align with the
core competencies and objectives of the Sport Management field, preparing me to be a well-
rounded and competent professional in the sports industry. "I can do everything through him who
gives me strength." (The Holy Bible, 2023, p. Philippians 4:13). I know that by relying upon the
Lord, I will accomplish these goals.
