Introduction
There are many different types of experience that student athletes can have throughout
their time. Coaches all have different ways of running things for students. There are different
parts that will be important such as social and academic as well as the sport and the training to
the sport. Setting standards for the athletes from the beginning will help develop the program.
The core values that will be necessary for this program will be trust, responsibility, balance,
growth, kindness and respect. There will be many different types of goals, short and long term
realistic and unrealistic. The name of this program will be called Athletes United. This program
is to help the student be the best they can on and off the field. This will also help them learn
different types of life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership.
Mission Statement
When creating a mission statement, there are many different things you need to think of.
Some key points are who is your audience, what will be beneficial to people, what do you plan to
do with your business or organization and finally what makes your business or organization
unique. The mission statement for this program is where everyone is included, and no one is
excluded. Every time the student athletes come, they will be able to focus on their work
academically because they are a student first then an athlete. Instilling God into their minds may
help them better on and off the field and courts. “When people feel included, they are better able
to contribute to the group and their society without fear of being ostracized.” (2022) They will be
able to socialize with each other and talk to see what is going on in other sports or if they need to
put in extra work to be better.
Core Values
The core values that will be necessary for this program will be trust, responsibility,
balance, growth, kindness and respect. Each of these values are important because they will carry
with the athlete into the real world too. Trust is something that everyone will need to have,
student athletes will need to trust their teammates, coaches and teachers that they will help mold
them into a better athlete and person. Responsibility is one of the most important values. This
relates to equipment at the younger level. A lot of kids forget parts of their equipment and their
parents will have to save the day and bring it to them. It is not the parents responsibility to bring
them their equipment, the athlete should have it packed the night before. This will also go for
academic work, it is their responsibility to get the work they miss when they are absent or hand
in assignments on time. Balance is sometimes forgotten, some may get sucked so far into their
sport that they forget to balance their personal life with their sport. Keeping a nice balance is
good for the mental health of athletes. Growth is another key value. This is something that you
will want to keep an eye on, you will be able to see the athlete grow on the field and
academically. There's always room for improvement and growth. Kindness, even if someone is
struggling you would want to be lifted up by a teammate. Teammates become family. Respect is
a universal value that most people have. Treat others the way you want to be treated is something
that has been instilled in everyone's head since kindergarten. If you don’t have respect for
someone they won’t have it for you. I believe that all of these are important core values that are
needed for this program and for student athletes.
Philosophy
“A coaching philosophy is a central plank in understanding a coach’s behaviors and
forms a core aspect of coach education.” (LYLE, 2017) The coaching philosophy that I have for
this program is that if the student athlete is putting in the effort they will get the result that they
want. With all the core values and operating principles I believe this will be successful for
student athletes. They will be able to focus on things that are important to them and the sport to
help them be the best athlete they can be and the best person they can be.
Operating Principles
This will have a set way on how to be successful. Attitude, willingness to listen, ability to push
yourself are some of the main operating principles that will be in effect. Having a good attitude
will help them be successful and will want the coach to work with them more. Having the
willingness to listen will also help in the classroom and on the field. Coaches like to work with
athletes who listen and try to fix their mistakes rather than it go in one ear and out the other.
Having the ability to push yourself will also set you up for success and on the right path with the
coach. At times practice and conditioning may get tiring, but pushing yourself will just help
show the coach that you are all in. With all these operating principles in place this will help the
student athlete build a good relationship with the coach and be on the coach’s good side. Because
these all lead to a coachable athlete.
Goals
The goals for this program are both short term and long term, unrealistic and realistic.
The long term goal is for all student athletes to graduate at 100% as well as get a job in their field
of study. This goal may be unrealistic in the fact that some schools stated they only have an 82%
graduation rate. A short term goal is that students are focused on their school work, sport and
making time for themselves. It is important to remind student athletes that they are a student first
and an athlete second. The point of this program is to help students with their school work as
well as make connections, and learn skills that they will need in the future while playing the
sport they love. Proverbs 20:4 “May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans
succeed.” If you follow your heart you will be successful. All student athletes tend to do this
which is why they are student athletes.
