Team Scenario Assignment
It has been around two weeks since I was given the position of head coach at Amos
University. I moved here not too long ago after receiving an offer to become the head coach of
the team. For the past ten years, my team has not exactly been winning games, and now that I am
in charge of them, I am responsible for that. My new team has consistently had a bad
performance in games and tournaments, regardless of the circumstances. In the seven years that
have passed since they began competing in the Conference Tournament, they have not been able
to secure a single victory. Due to the fact that I did not attend this particular college, I am not
familiar with either the town or the university. It is becoming clear to me that I may need to put
in a lot of effort in order to turn around this team and the fans as I make my way around the
campus and meet other people.
Will you keep the current Assistant Coaches and Support Staff, or start fresh and hire new
ones?
My first order of business is to assess the performance of the team. Are the assistant
coaches and support personnel making a constructive contribution to the team? We are aware
that the team has not been successful in recent times; yet, how does the level of player growth
and general team morale appear? To what extent do I believe that the existing staff collaborates
with the students? The presence of strong chemistry can be an essential factor in the success of a
team. If there is chemistry between the people, you might not want to bring in new people since
it could throw off the equilibrium of the relationship.
3
Determine the level of experience and competence possessed by the current staff. When it comes
to taking this team to the next level, do they possess the knowledge and abilities that are
required? What are my long-term vision and objectives for the team? To what extent does the
current workforce share this vision, or would it be more beneficial to bring in new employees to
better support my goals?
Additionally, it is beneficial to get comments from the other players. They can offer
insightful and helpful information regarding the efficiency of the current staff and whether or not
changes would be advantageous. Lastly, budget: Does the institution have a budget that makes it
possible to hire more employees? The process of recruiting new talent can be expensive, so it is
necessary for me to consider the prospective rewards in comparison to the financial
repercussions.
What will be the short and long-term Goals that you will set for your program, and in what
timeframes?
When beginning a new coaching position, it is essential to establish both short-term and
long-term goals that are crystal clear. The duration of short-term goals should range from zero to
six months. These short-term objectives ought to include the development of skills, the
establishment of effective communication, the formation of networks, the formulation of a
coaching philosophy, and the incorporation of technology. (Vasko, 2024). Skills development
encompasses the enhancement of coaching abilities through participation in mentorship
programs, workshops, and certification programs. A possible example would be acquiring
knowledge of the most recent coaching approaches and sports science. For the purpose of
fostering a more supportive team, improving communication skills in order to connect better
with athletes, coworkers, and parents will be of great assistance. The participation in
4
communication workshops and the solicitation of feedback can also be helpful experiences. In
addition, participating in local coaching events, seminars, and conferences in order to broaden
your professional network is an effective way to establish contacts with seasoned coaches and
sports professionals who are able to offer useful insights and prospective mentorship
possibilities, which will only serve to strengthen the team.
Develop and articulate a coaching philosophy that is congruent with the individual values
and concepts held by the coaching staff and the members of the entire team. To build a distinct
coaching identity and to influence decision-making, it is important to explain your coaching
beliefs in a clear and concise manner to the staff and the team.
With regard to the short-term objectives, the last thing you should do is become familiar
with the technology that is pertinent to coaching, such as video analysis tools and sports
analytics. In order to improve the efficiency of your training programs, you should use these
suggestions.
In terms of duration, the long-term objectives span anything from one to five years. These
objectives include advancing one's career, achieving success as a team, making contributions to
the sport, leaving a legacy of player growth, and maintaining a healthy balance.
As the coach, you are responsible for making plans for professional advancement, which
may include taking on leadership positions or becoming the head coach. In order to get ready for
more high-level duties, you should look for mentorship opportunities and pursue advanced
coaching qualifications. In order to ensure the success and development of your workers, you
need to cultivate a culture of excellence inside your respective team. Establish objectives for the
accomplishment of championships, the growth of athletes to their maximum potential, and the
establishment of a legacy of success over the course of time.
5
Participate in the sports community by contributing to it through activities such as
publishing articles, giving presentations at conferences, or leading coaching clinics. By sharing
your expertise, you can bring attention to your team. It is also possible to leave a legacy of player
development by cultivating players who not only excel on the field but also make a meaningful
contribution to society. “Measure success not just in wins but in the positive impact on athletes’
lives.” (Vasko, 2024).
Finally, for long-term goals, balance and well-being are important; in order to achieve
sustained success, it is important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. It is important that you
cultivate a constructive coaching environment.
What type of Team Culture are you going to seek to build, and how will you do that?
“Team culture is a collection of values, behaviors, working practices, and beliefs that
team members share while aiming to fulfill their collective purpose.” (Smart & Smart, 2024).
You need to have some ideas about what you want, and then you need to meet down with your
staff and talk about those ideas. If you want to improve your ability to select what kind of culture
you want for your team, you should think about reading the advise of other team leaders and
meeting with them if you have the opportunity.
How are you going to get current players to ‘Buy In’ to your program?
My opinion is that you should collaborate with your team in order to determine where the
players desire to be. How much effort are they willing to put in for a squad that is going to win?
If you want to win, you need to show them that you are serious about it. You should advocate for
your team and set an example for them to follow by becoming a model yourself. They are going
to agree with you once they see that you are willing to go the extra mile and assist them in
winning.

How to build Team Cohesion?
Having an open door policy, encouraging communication, and always being transparent
are all things that you need to accomplish. For the purpose of strengthening the link between
members of each team, team-building exercises are required. A return to the fundamentals of
having goals and trusting the team is also necessary. Rejoice in your accomplishments and, when
necessary, offer opportunities for professional growth and development.
How to develop Leadership on the team?
It is my opinion that the most effective method for developing leadership skills is to offer
opportunity for individuals of the team to grow. It is necessary to maintain open lines of
communication and provide players with accountability. In addition, one must always
acknowledge the efforts of the team.
How will you motivate your players during these seasons of rebuilding?
In my opinion, the goals that the team has established are what motivates them. Celebrate
the achievement of a goal or victory once it has been accomplished. When delivered in the
appropriate context, feedback is always beneficial. This can also provide you with growth in a
particular area that you may be missing. Ensure that you are always supportive and encouraging
for the culture of the team. It is important to encourage players to support one another and to
develop strong ties within the squad.
How will you build your players’ Confidence in both themselves and you as a leader?
Lead from example, be the best you can be. Always help lift others up, like the following bible
verse. "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as, in fact, you are doing."
(1 Thessalonians 5:11 - Bible Gateway, n.d.). Hopefully, this will lead to a successful team and
season.
