Being in school for as long as I have you will definitely have good and bad
teachers. e Many teachers are set in their ways and will only teach in the way
they think is right. e Students learn in so many different ways and a good
teacher will understand that and try to get to know their students in order to
find the most effective way everyone in their class learns. e One of my best
teachers was in high school, Mr. Gonzalez my high school math teacher, he
was a very hands-on teacher and we used to do projects in building things
using mathematical equations, I will never forget his class because I think I
learn a lot in that class. e Mr. Gonzalez used active learning to help us
understand the functionality of math. e He was the teacher that made me love
math and until this day I still enjoy and understand math very much because I
was able to apply the practical uses of math. e Another basic principle Mr.
Gonzales used in class was encouraging cooperation among students, I have
never liked working in groups but with Mr. Gonzalez I truly did love it. e He
would place us in groups for bigger projects, that is where I learned to not only
work in groups but that I was more of a leader, and it was easy for me to
take-charge and help with delegating. e Mr. Gonzalez was and continues to be a
great teacher and I learned so much from him, his class seemed fun and not
at all boring and hard, he made math fun and easy. e On the complete other
side of the spectrum was my Junior College English professor, she would
assign so much work and it always felt like just busy work, because when we
would turn it in it would take her weeks to grade and return to us, there
feedback was never given in a timely manner in order to be used for improving
future assignments. e She had very high expectations, however never verbalized
them to the class, it was very covert. e It was very hard to try to meet her
expectations as they seemed to change daily. e She was a very difficult teacher
and hard to please person. e I was happy with the B+ that I received in her
class but can truly say I learned nothing in that class. e This teacher could have
worked more on giving prompt feedback, especially when it was something like
a rough draft that we were going to use to improve our final drafts. e She also
could have been more overt with her expectations in order to let us know what
was expected and give us a chance to ask questions and clarify what was
expected of us to get rid of any confusion. e Knowledge is power and the more
knowledge I would have had in regard to her expectations and what I could
have done to increase learning and improve my grade in the class. e Ephesians
4:11-12 says, “The gifts he gave were that some would be . . . teachers, . . .
for building up the body of Christ”. e Some are called to be teachers by God. If
more of us would allow God to take the wheel and lead us to where we need
to be, then we would all be better off.
