When I was in school, I was struggling with Spanish speaking subject. As Spanish
is not my mother tongue, I was finding it extremely challenging to learn new
concepts such as present perfect continuous tense and past perfect continuous
tense. A program was in place for children who did not have Spanish as their first
language. The class was extremely beneficial for me because the teacher would
pay attention to the learning needs of every student and explain in detail the
Spanish rules. One of the best things about the program was that the teacher was
extremely patient with us. Even though, as elementary kids, we were not very
disciplined and systematic, she would calmly clarify our doubts and would never
lose her temper. Because of her constant support and encouragement, I gained
confidence in Spanish, and I started thoroughly enjoying the subject. Even today, I
feel comfortable writing, listening, and talking in Spanish. Her teaching had a
positive impact on my Spanish skills and knowledge because she promoted active
learning and encouraged the learners to participate in the learning environment
(Munna & Kalam, 2021).
I have also experienced poor teaching behavior that adversely affected my
confidence in a specific subject and reduced my grades. My math teacher in
elementary school was extremely strict and scolded students in case they had
any doubts or queries. In most of the classes, the teacher would simply ask the
students to solve a set of problems in their notebooks. He never really paid
attention to whether the students were actually able to solve the problems or not.
Interaction and engagement were completely lacking in the math class, due to
which the grade of most of the students was poor. Due to the poor teaching
behavior of the math teacher, I was intimidated by the subject for a very long
time, and I performed poorly in it. I personally believe that the principle that the
math teacher adopted poorly was that he did not properly articulate the
expectations relating to the learning objectives (Kelley et al., 2021). The teacher
could have improved the learning experience of the students by creating an
engaging environment and creating opportunities for them to share their doubts
without being scared.
I believe in the learning and teaching environment, it is very important to have
proper engagement. It can play a key role in encouraging the learners to actively
participate in the learning environment and have an enriching experience.
