I was immediately drawn in to what you wrote about suicide, in saying that studies
show that having Spirituality has shown a decreased risk in folks who would complete
suicide (Rasic, et.el., 2011).. c My studies thus far complements this very fact. Your
article is well written. c Scripture does state that "All Scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16, KJV). I believe that God's Holy Word gives us insight
and when it comes to our studies that would contradict His Word, we as Christians are
to defend it.Secular Psychologist may not knowingly Len d credence to God's word, but
oftentimes, they leave more questions unanswered that are answered in studying God's
word. c With the subject of suicide, a Scripture that comes to mind is "Thou wilt keep
him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusted in thee" (Isaiah
26:3, KJV). c Your references of Christians using the Bible and psychologists using the
DSM 5 to help people with their extensive knowledge of human nature. The assignment
asked what happens when a Christianity and psychological study suggests a scientific
finding that opposes the Bible. DSM-5 replaces the diagnostic name “gender identity
disorder” with “gender dysphoria”. DSM-5’s objectives are to avoid stigma and ensure
clinical care for individuals who see and feel themselves to be a different gender than
their assigned gender. DSM-5 states that the initial condition for the identification of
gender dysphoria in both adults and teenagers is a evident contradiction between the
gender the patient believes themselves to be and what society perceives them to be. This
discrepancy should be ongoing for at least 6 months and should consist of 2 or more of
the subsequent criteria (American Psychiatric Association, 2013):
• Noticeable incongruence between the gender that the patient sees themselves
are, and what their classified gender assignment
• An intense need to do away with his or her primary or secondary sex
features (or, in the case of young teenagers, to avert the maturity of the
likely secondary features)
• An intense desire to have the primary or secondary sex features of the other
gender
• A deep desire to transform into another gender
• A profound need for society to treat them as another gender
• A powerful assurance of having the characteristic feelings and responses of
the other gender
• The second necessity is that the condition should be connected with clinically
important distress, or affects the individual significantly socially, at work, and
in other import areas of life.
The Bible states twice homosexuality is an abomination. Leviticus 18:22 You shall not
lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination and Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies
with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall
surely be put to death; their blood is upon them (King James Bible, 2017).
These clients often seek therapy due to experiencing religious trauma of being
disciplined to save their soul as to not be an abomination. While Christianity and the
DSM 5 are conflicting is should be noted that counselors should not allow
Countertransference, which occurs when a therapist transfers emotions to a person in
therapy or transference in which the person in treatment redirects feelings for others
onto the therapist to occur. It is important for counselors therapeutically assist the client
and not force our own beliefs. I like how you are able to view psychology that opposes
the bible as something of information. I feel that psychology and Biblical views are very
intune with one another but there are those instances where we find ourselves in a
pickle. I brought up in my post about the divide of evolution and how it is based upon
all we look at the information that is presented. As you stated in James 1:5 that we are
seekers of knowledge and with that sometimes that knowledge is something that we
either just do not understand or we are not meant to understand. This thought draws me
back to Genesis and the eating of the fruit of knowledge (NIV World BIblical
Translation, 2019). Knowledge is a wonderful thing but we must keep inline with that
of biblical teachings. While reading your post Allyson, I couldn't help but think of just
how much we do not know as humans. For instance, we only use a fraction of our
brains ( O'Doherty, et. el, 2011). Something that you mentioned was that we all come to
a different understiang on any one topic and tom e that is very factual. I work as a
marriage and family therapist, and I treat many couples and families that struggle with
this exact issue. We can line up the children in the family and ask them as adults what
it was like growing up in the home and you will get varying answers. This would make
it seem as though the children in the family are crazy but it truly is when you break it
down to the core a perception of how we view the subject
