As I have previously discussed in the first assignment, I plan to focus my
educational endeavors to studying developmental psychology in specific
childhood trauma in relation to the criminal justice system. In regard to
this assignment the division I explored was the Society for Child and
Family Policy and Practice. I chose this topic, because I felt as though this
division was one of the most closely related divisions to my field of choice.
The research topics that I noticed that were commonly talked about were
child well-being, child maltreatment, and the overall homelessness of
families with children (American Psychological Association, 2022).
While researching different studies related to this division, one topic in
particular that stuck out to me was the research on the impact of the
contact that children have with their incarcerated parents. Poehlmann-
Tynan (2015), discussed in the book the different studies that are
concerned with the type of contact the children participate in such as
virtual versus in person contact. I bring this study up, because it brings up
an interesting discussion in the field of developmental psychology in
regard to the heavy reliance that society has on social media and the
internet. For example, even during quarantine I was unable to see my kids
in person and would have to see them virtually in which I noticed that the
virtual visits were harder for the children to focus.
Furthermore, another topic that stook out to me was homelessness.
Haskett (2017), Discussed the Community Action Targeting Children who
are Homeless project and this stuck out to me, because this project uses
evidence-based research to positively impact and help children and
families who are homeless. For example, this project provides both
children and families with services to improve their everyday lives
(Haskett, 2017). Overall, this assignment was beneficial in providing me
insight into the trending research topics that are related to my field of
choice.
