Discussion Thread: What Motivates You?
Write a summary of your results (do not copy and paste the interpretation; use your own
words to convey what your results mean). Discuss what you believe the results mean about
your ability to function in the workplace.
My scoring and interpretation of the Self-Assessment: What Motivates You Assignment my
achievement results was a 25. According to this assessment section, 25 is the highest score
achieved, indicating a high need for achievement. I was not too surprised with my results as I
have always been an overachiever in my professional and academic careers. I like recognition for
my onerous and dedicated work, which is well deserved. I also value being appreciated and
recognized for the time and dedication I put into my work.
My result for power was 13 out of 25. It indicates a high need for control. Being an office
manager for a multi-provider dental office with five locations took some work. Overlooking a
staff of 12 or more in each of the five locations, I had no other alternative but to show power and
control; however, it was the type of power and control that influenced others and helped the staff
become the best versions of themselves while providing high-quality dental services.
My result for affiliation was 19 out of 25. It indicates a high need for affiliation. Working with
many types of personalities, from the dentists, the staff, and the sales reps to the patients,
requires a very distinctive personality. It takes someone to be highly personable and incredibly
outgoing. So, the results for this assessment section were unsurprising when they revealed that I
want to establish and maintain friendly relations with others and that I may be adept at
facilitating cooperation.
My results suggest that I function professionally and effectively in the workplace. I am sociable,
approachable, and a leader who wants to serve her staff in their best interests only. I genuinely
enjoy meeting and working with individuals from all levels of society and have developed
enduring relationships with team members and patients over the past 20 years; this self-
assessment precisely defines my behavior and characteristics in a highly positive manner.
Find an article that explains and develops the scale used in your Self-Assessment
assignment or similar one. Write a summary that gives a brief overview of the article and
then discusses five specific issues regarding the scale/assessment used: how many questions,
how many sub-factors, what its reliability/validity is, how it is scored, etc.
Grabowski, Chudzicka-Czupała, and Stapor (2021) studied the relationship between work ethic
dimensions and motivation based on self-determination theory among 405 Polish employees,
averaging 35.23 years old. They used the Multidimensional Work Ethic Profile (MWEP) and the
Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivation Scale (WEIMS). Significant results indicated that work
ethic facets, such as the “centrality of work, valuing hard work, anti-leisure sentiment, and delay
of gratification, were positively related to autonomous motivation and non-autonomous
introjection” (Grabowski, Chudzicka-Czupala & Stapor, 2021 para. 14). The high value of hard
work and self-reliance also correlates with extrinsic rewards and social approval. These insights
can guide training programs and employee management to boost motivation and job satisfaction.
Write a response to the following applied question(s):
Think of a coworker, family member, classmate, or friend whom you perceive to be both a
Type A individual and successful in their professional aspirations—interview that person
via phone, email, or face-to-face. Start by asking the individual why they believe they have
been successful in their career. The answers will include both traits and behaviors. Then,
ask about their greatest strengths and weaknesses. Draft an essay briefly describing the
individual and their position, followed by how or if the person’s answers are relevant to
Type A competencies. Provide specific examples. Were the answers consistent with your
original opinion of the person’s Type A personality—did your perception match their
responses to you? Why or why not?
Today, I spoke and had a phone interview with Danielle, a senior project manager at a top
software company. Danielle has effectively managed many project developments and has
quickly developed professionally. She is recognized for her high level of readiness and
determination. Danielle accredits her achievement to her well-organized schedule and committed
work ethic. She finds enthusiasm in achieving her objectives and thrives under duress. Among
her abilities, Danielle can multitask and be very target-driven. She also acknowledges that her
excessive disparaging tendency can create tension in her work group and damage affiliations.
Ambition, orderliness, competition, and perseverance are attributed to the Type A personality,
which these behaviors seem to support (Chaturvedi, Bhandari, & Jambhulkar, 2023; Yavuz &
Kayhan, 2020). Danielle’s vitality and high energy levels in her self-analysis supported my firm
belief that she has a Type A personality and characteristics.
However, Danielle’s achievements can also be attributed to her Type A characteristics, which
include exceptional organizational skills and motivation. On the other hand, they also can pose
specific problems, including tension and social issues (Griffin, Phillips & Gully, 2019).
From a Christian worldview perspective, what are the areas of strength from your Self-
Assessment results, and why is this important scripturally? Also, from the Christian
worldview perspective, what areas of weakness are revealed by your Self-Assessment
results, and why is this important scripturally?
The need for achievement, inspired by Colossians 3:23 (English Standard Version, 2001),
compels people to stand out and constructively influence others. Then again, as rebuked in
Matthew 20:25-28 (English Standard Version, 2001), pursuing power can result in arrogance and
disregard for others' welfare. Nevertheless, the need for affiliation, supported by 1 Thessalonians
5:11 (English Standard Version, 2001), nurtures unity and collaboration. Recognizing these
doctrines leads people to honor God and supportively impact their affiliations.
