The Role of Correctional Facilities in Recidivism
I. Introduction
A. This paper will analyze the role of correctional facilities in causing recidivism
i. Correctional facilities were created to help convicts change their
behaviors. Yet, statistics show that around 45% offenders were rearrested
within a year of their release, 16% within their second year, 8% within the
third, 11% within 4-6 years, and 4% within 7-9 years. This data gives an
overall value of 68% of offenders being rearrested within six years of their
release and 83% within nine years.
ii. The initial question for this research is therefore; What factors within or
about the correctional centers make offenders to go back to their criminal
behaviors after release?
B. Background Information
i. Recidivism cases started being apparent after the civil war era when the
correctional officers improved their record-keeping, only to realize that
most criminals were being arrested soon after being released from prisons
and other detention centers (Van Hasselt & Bourke, 2018). More
