Combatants and Antagonism Assignment
In an attempt to explore the link between psychology and Christianity, David Entwistle
stresses the significance of engaging with viewpoints that are different from our own. Entwistle
contends that even those perspectives that we disagree with have some important lesson to offer
(Entwistle, 2021). The theory is particularly applicable to the Enemies model that explores a
conflict between Christian and secular worldviews. The three major things that individuals can
learn from the secular combatants’ perspective include the importance of scientific rigor and
empirical evidence, ethical considerations in research and practice, and understanding of human
behavior.
Importance of scientific rigor and empirical evidence
First, secular combatants stress the importance of scientific rigor and empirical evidence.
Any field including psychology can learn vital lessons from the commitment to basing
understanding on observable and measurable phenomena. The emphasis on evidence-based
practice serves to ensure that treatments and interventions are empirically validated and also
theoretically sound (Entwistle, 2021). The approach also enhances the effectiveness of
psychological interventions, given that practices are based on reliable data. Moreover, the
scientific rigor that secular combatants promote fosters critical thinking, reminding individuals to
seek out evidence, question assumptions, and be open minded when it comes to new information
(Barnes, 2022). Such a mindset is critical in evading biases and arriving at well-founded
conclusions.
Understanding of human behavior
Second, secular combatants call for the understanding of the biological, psychological,
and social dimensions of human behavior. They advocate for the biopsychosocial model, which
3
integrates these factors to enable a holistic understanding of human nature (Entwistle, 2021).
Using this model provides a clear picture of the complex relationship between the effects on
human behavior and mental health. Through this perspective, interdisciplinary collaboration
across sociology, biology, and anthropology is achieved. In the end, it promotes the
understanding of human behavior through the incorporation of diverse perspectives. Their
emphasis on mental health also underscores the urgent and serious need to address mental health
issues just the same way as it is with the case with physical health problems (Barnes, 2022). This
promotes the increased awareness and highlights the need for more research and resources in this
critical area.
Ethical considerations in research and practice
Lastly, secular combatants hold ethical considerations in high regard in both research and
practice. It is one area that is usually critical as it ensure responsible and respectful research and
practice. Informed consent, confidentiality, and the protection of vulnerable populations are
some principles are that held high in this area (Entwistle, 2021). These ethical guidelines are
crucial in safeguarding the dignity and rights of the subjects of psychological research.
Professional integrity, which is also part of this aspect of secular combatants, ensures
accountability and transparency and is vital in maintaining public trust and ensuring that
psychological practices remain in the highest possible standards (Barnes, 2022). The insistence
on social justice also necessitates the consideration of the broader social context in which people
live, which advocates for equitable access to mental health services and addressing systematic
inequalities in the creation of a fair and just society.
Overall, secular combatants are crucial in enhancing people’s understanding and practice
of psychology. This version of the Enemies Model is committed to empirical evidence and
4
scientific rigor, ensures a holistic approach to human nature, and strongly emphasizes on ethical
considerations and social justice. These aspects ensure a more comprehensive, ethical, and
effective approach to psychology.
