STIMULUS CONTROL OF BEHAVIOR
A. Identifications and Measurement of Stimulus Control
An illustrative instance is the seminal study conducted by Reynolds (1961). Two avian
specimens were subjected to a reinforcement regimen utilizing a variable-interval schedule,
contingent upon their pecking of a circular response key. The provision of reinforcement for

be observed, the identification and differentiation of stimuli involve multiple factors. The
investigation of the issue through empirical analysis has predominantly utilized the concept
of stimulus generalization.
Stimulus generalization can be considered as the antithesis of stimulus discrimination, or
differential responding. Stimulus generalization is observed in an organism when it exhibits a
comparable response to two or more stimuli. The observation of stimulus generalization was
initially made by Pavlov. The researcher observed that the dogs exhibited a conditioned
response to similar stimuli subsequent to the use of a single stimulus as a conditioned
stimulus. The subjects exhibited a lack of differential response to stimuli that bore similarity
to the initial conditioned stimulus. Subsequently, the phenomenon of stimulus generalization
has been investigated across various scenarios and taxa.
According to Ghirlanda and Enquist's (2003) research, it has been established through
empirical data collected over the course of approximately a century that generalization is a
fundamental behavioral phenomenon, whose basic characteristics seem to be universal (p.
27).
The maximum frequency of pecking was observed in reaction to the initial 580-nm hue.

game poses a challenge in experimental research. Experiments carried out in laboratories
usually employ stimuli that comprise distinguishable characteristics. This section will
examine the stimulus and reinforcement variables that dictate which cues govern behavior.
The subsequent section will examine factors related to learning.
The primary determinant of whether a specific stimulus feature governs response is the
sensory capacity and orientation of the organism. The sensory world of an organism is
determined by its sensory capacity and orientation towards stimuli. Human beings are unable
to perceive sounds with a frequency exceeding approximately 20,000 cycles per second (cps)
and lack the ability to visually perceive objects located behind them. Canines possess the

one to receive food reinforcement, as documented by Blackmore and colleagues in 2008.

plausible that the visual content could outshine the textual content. The child's reliance on
visual cues may facilitate rapid acquisition of the narrative content, but may not necessarily
promote robust lexical learning.
The phenomenon of overshadowing has garnered significant attention in modern research
on spatial navigation. Various stimuli are utilized by both humans and animals to navigate
their surroundings, including beacons, landmarks, and spatial or geographical cues.
According to Horne and Pearce's (2011) research, the presence of a specific cue, such as a
conspicuous landmark, may have the potential to dominate the acquisition of other forms of
spatial information. The phenomenon of whether landmark cues take precedence over spatial
cues exhibits gender differences, as evidenced by the research conducted by Rodríguez,
Chamizo, and Mackintosh (2011). Additional research on the phenomenon of overshadowing
can be found in the works of Dwyer, Haselgrove, and Jones (2011) as well as Jennings,
Bonardi, and Kirkpatrick (2007).
The establishment of stimulus control is contingent upon the nature of reinforcement
employed, as posited by Weiss (2012). The instrumental behavior in appetitive situations is
more susceptible to being controlled by certain types of stimuli compared to aversive

conducted on pigeons, as documented by LoLordo in 1979.
A study conducted by Foree and LoLordo in 1973 involved the training of two groups of
pigeons to press a foot treadle when presented with a compound stimulus comprising a red
light and a tone with a pitch of 440 cps. In the absence of the light-tone compound,
reinforcement of responses did not occur. Food was used as a reinforcement to encourage a
specific group of pigeons to press the treadle. The avoidance of shock served as a
reinforcement for the group that engaged in treadle pressing. In the experimental paradigm,
the avoidance group was instructed to activate the treadle when presented with the light-tone
compound stimulus to avoid the delivery of a shock. However, in the event that the
avoidance response was not initiated during the light-tone stimulus, a brief shock was
intermittently administered until a response was elicited. Both cohorts of Columbidae

species remains largely unknown. It can be hypothesized that bats, which rely on
echolocation for food foraging, exhibit greater auditory control during feeding as compared
to pigeons. These inquiries continue to be productive domains for prospective investigation.
Thus far, it has been assumed that organisms perceive the different constituents of a
multifaceted stimulus as discrete and independent entities. The concurrent exhibition of a
light and tone was approached by me as comprising distinct visual and auditory stimuli. The
cognitive framework that pertains to a compound stimulus is commonly referred to as the
stimulus-element approach, which has been the prevailing perspective in the field of learning
theory for approximately eight decades. A significant theoretical perspective posits that
living beings perceive a compound stimulus as a unified entity that is not fragmented into
constituent parts or elements. The aforementioned methodology is commonly referred to as
the configural-cue approach. Despite its origins in Gestalt psychology, the configural-cue
approach has gained prominence in behavior theory only in recent times.
The notion of a configural cue can be exemplified by contemplating the auditory
experience of a symphony orchestra. The orchestral timbre is derived from the distinct tonal
characteristics of the constituent instruments. The auditory experience of the orchestra as a
whole is distinct from that of its constituent instruments, with some of the latter being
challenging to discern amidst the collective sound of the orchestra. The auditory perception is
primarily focused on the arrangement of the acoustic emissions produced by the ensemble of
musical instruments.
The configural-cue approach, as advocated by John Pearce (1987, 1994, 2002), has
gained prominence in modern behavior theory due to its ability to account for various
learning phenomena. The present analysis will examine the overshadowing effect, as
presented in Table 8.1. As previously mentioned, the experimental design for overshadowing
entails two distinct groups of participants and two stimulus elements, one of which is of low
intensity (a) and the other of high intensity (B).
During the conditioning process, the overshadowing group is exposed to a compound cue
consisting of two stimuli (aB) that are presented together and paired with reinforcement. The
control group was subjected to conditioning with solely the low intensity stimulus (a).
Subsequently, assessments are carried out for every group wherein the less potent stimulus
component (a) is exhibited in isolation. The results of the tests indicate a lower level of
response among individuals in the overshadowing group as compared to those in the control

C. Learning Factors in Stimulus Control

individual's acquired knowledge regarding said stimuli, rather than solely on their
detectability. The notion that the degree to which stimuli govern behavior may be contingent
upon one's familiarity with said stimuli was initially posited as an explanatory framework for
the occurrence of stimulus generalization. As previously mentioned, stimulus generalization
pertains to the phenomenon wherein a conditioned response to a particular stimulus is also
elicited when other stimuli that are akin to the original cue are introduced. According to
Pavlov's theory, the phenomenon of stimulus generalization can be attributed to the transfer
of learned responses to other stimuli that share physical similarities with the original
conditioned stimulus (CS).
Lashley and Wade (1946) expressed their disagreement with Pavlov's proposition in a
vigorous manner. According to Lashley and Wade, the phenomenon of stimulus
generalization can be attributed to the lack of learning rather than the transfer of learning.
The authors postulated that stimulus generalization transpires when organisms lack the
ability to differentiate between stimuli. In contrast to Pavlov's perspective, Lashley and Wade
placed greater emphasis on the role of an organism's prior learning experiences in
determining the shape of a stimulus generalization gradient, as opposed to the physical
properties of the stimuli being tested.
The findings suggest that Lashley and Wade's theories were more accurate than Pavlov's.
Several academic studies have demonstrated that learning experiences can significantly
modify stimulus control. Stimulus discrimination training has been identified as a highly
effective technique for regulating behavior in response to a stimulus, as noted by Kehoe
(2008). The process of training for stimulus discrimination can be carried out through
classical or instrumental conditioning techniques.
Campolattaro, Schnitker, and Freeman (2008) employed a discrimination training method
in their study on eyeblink conditioning with laboratory rats, specifically in Experiment 3. The
conditioned stimuli (CSs) utilized in the study were a low-frequency tone at 2,000 cycles per
second (cps) and a high-frequency tone at 8,000 cps. Each session comprised 100 trials. In
50% of the trials, a specific tone (A+) was associated with the unconditioned stimulus (US).
During the remaining trials, the presentation of the other tone (B-) was carried out without
the unconditioned stimulus (US).
The experimental findings indicate that the rats exhibited a gradual elevation in their
eyeblink response towards the A+ tone, which was consistently associated with the
unconditioned stimulus. After the 15th session, the rats exhibited a response rate of over 85%
towards A+. The B- also exhibited an initial increase, albeit at a comparatively slower rate.
Moreover, subsequent to the tenth session, there was a gradual decrease in responsiveness to
the B- tone. Upon completion of the experiment, the collected data exhibited distinct and
favorable differentiation in response to the two tones.
The impact of discrimination training on stimulus control is being investigated. The
process of discrimination training involves establishing control of the instrumental response
by the stimuli S+ and S–. To what extent does S+ exert control over instrumental behavior,
and what variables influence the level of precision in the resulting stimulus control? Merely
observing differential responding to S+ versus S- is insufficient to address these inquiries. It
is imperative to determine the steepness of the generalization gradient during the testing of
participants with stimuli that exhibit systematic variation from the S+. An essential inquiry
pertains to the specific component of the discrimination training protocol that is accountable
for the particular form of stimulus generalization gradient that is achieved. The
aforementioned concerns were initially examined in seminal studies conducted by Jenkins
and Harrison (1960, 1962).
The study conducted by Jenkins and Harrison investigated the extent to which auditory
stimuli varying in pitch can establish control over the pecking behavior of pigeons that
receive food reinforcement. Jenkins and Harrison discovered that through appropriate
training protocols, auditory cues can also effectively regulate the behavior of pigeons. The
effects of three distinct training procedures were assessed. During all three procedures, a tone
with a frequency of 1,000 cycles per second was utilized as a stimulus for reinforcing the act
of pecking a response key, which was followed by access to food on a schedule that varied
based on intervals.
Following the conclusion of the three distinct training protocols, each cohort underwent
an assessment to determine their pecking behavior in response to tones of varying
frequencies, with the aim of evaluating the precision with which pitch was controlled.
The group that was not exposed to discrimination training, known as the control group,
exhibited a comparable response to all of the test stimuli. The behavior of the tones was not
influenced by their pitch; they exhibited a lack of responsiveness to auditory stimuli. Both
alternative training procedures yielded a greater degree of stimulus control based on pitch.

laboratory research on stimulus control.
Researchers have explored the possibility of an organism's ability to discern the effects of
pentobarbital sedation and whether other substances such as chlordiazepoxide, alcohol, and
methamphetamine elicit comparable sensations to those of sedatives. Stolerman et al. (2011)
utilized discrimination training involving drug stimuli and stimulus generalization tests to
address inquiries related to this topic.
The mechanisms responsible for stimulus control by drug stimuli exhibit a striking
resemblance to the mechanisms that Jenkins and Harrison (1960, 1962) identified for the
regulation of key pecking through auditory cues in pigeons.
Kenneth Spence (1936) proposed one of the earliest and most impactful theories on

In their study, Kearns et al. (2005) utilized a summation test to evaluate whether an S-
stimulus has the ability to suppress instrumental responding for cocaine after discrimination
training. As per the summation test, the acquisition of active inhibitory properties by S-
would result in the suppression of the response that is otherwise elicited by S+. In order to
verify this hypothesis, Kearns et al. (2005) equipped laboratory rats with the capability to
