SPSS CUMULATIVE ASSESSMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
This assignment is designed to evaluate the SPSS analytical and APA writing skills that you
have developed during the course. Part of a being a successful practitioner in psychology,
counseling, social work, and other behavioral science careers is understanding how to
intelligently incorporate research findings into practice, and conversely how to design research
and analyze data for questions that arise from work in the field. One fundamental aspect of these
skills is knowing which statistical test to use for a given research question and how to interpret
and effectively communicate the results to your audience. This assignment will present you with
five research scenarios and their corresponding research questions. Your job is to choose which
statistical test, of the eight you have learned this term, is the correct one for the scenario. You
will run the analysis and communicate the outcome in a Results section in current APA format.
INSTRUCTIONS
The following five research questions can be answered using one of the eight tests you
have learned this term, including: independent-samples t-test, paired-samples t-test, one-
way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA for independent measures, Pearson correlation
coefficient, bivariate linear regression, the chi-square test for goodness of fit, and the chi-
square test for independence. Each test will only be used once, and three tests will not
be used.
Use the information in the tables to construct your SPSS data file, just as you have been
doing in each homework assignment. There is only 1 correct choice of analysis for
each question. Remember to account for whether the test is 1-tailed or 2-tailed. The
assessment is open-book/open-notes.
Your answer must include: A) SPSS output, B) Results section in current APA style, and
C) the appropriate graph included as an APA-style figure.
For ANOVA problems (if applicable): Report statistical findings and make statements
for all main effects and interaction effects. Use Tukey’s test for any analyses requiring
post hoc tests.
This assignment is worth 100 points.
Please watch the “Review for the SPSS Cumulative Assessment” presentation in this module
for a refresher of the various statistical tests we have learned this term. It also will be helpful to
refer back to other module presentations as well as your homework assignments when necessary.
The scenarios begin on the next page.
Submit this assignment by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of Module/Week 8.

Problem Set 1:
Research Scenario: A clinical psychologist is studying the relationship between experiences
of racial discrimination and anxiety in a sample of 11 Black college students. Specifically, he
wants to determine if the number of self-reported experiences of racial discrimination predict
anxiety about the future. He asks students to fill out a questionnaire with higher scores
indicating a larger number of perceived experiences of racial discrimination. He then
administers a questionnaire designed to assess anxiety about the future in four domains:
social, professional, health, and financial. Scores on the questionnaire can range from 1 to 30,
with higher scores indicating higher anxiety about the future. All data are listed in the table
below. Does perceived racial discrimination predict levels of anxiety about the future?

Problem Set 2:
Research Scenario: A developmental psychologist is studying the development of object
permanence – the understanding that an object still exists even if it is out of sight. She tests
three groups of infants – nine who are 9 months old, nine who are 12 months old, and ten who
are 15 months old. She presents each of the infants with 10 trials. On each trial, a toy is first
shown to the child and then covered with a piece of cloth. The infant demonstrates object
permanence if he or she looks for the object when it’s covered. Each infant is given a score
for the number of trials (out of 10) on which he or she shows object permanence. Is there a
significant difference between the groups on demonstrations of object permanence?

Problem Set 3:
Research Scenario: A school psychologist is developing a new self-esteem program for high
schoolers that is designed with a social media component. In order to disseminate information
to the most students, he sends out a survey to 40 randomly selected students asking them to
choose their preferred social media platform. He records the frequencies of students who
chose each platform in the table below.

Problem Set 4:
Research Scenario: During intake sessions, a clinical psychologist specializing in treating
snake phobia administers a measure of snake phobia called the Snake Questionnaire (SNAQ-
12) (Zsido et al., 2018), as well as a standardized interview that measures generalized anxiety.
She wants to determine what the relationship is between these two measures. Is there a
relationship between SNAQ-12 snake phobia scores and generalized anxiety scores?

Research Scenario: The effects of a new faith-based anxiety treatment program are studied
in a group of elderly patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). One of the outcome
measures is the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) (Pachana et al., 2007), a measure with
possible scores from 0-20, with higher scores indicating higher anxiety. A large group of
elderly patients completed the GAI before treatment. Twelve patients with GAI scores of 10
or higher were chosen to participate in the study. The patients underwent the treatment
program and completed the GAI at the end of treatment. The scores are listed below. Do the
elderly patients exhibit decreased anxiety, as demonstrated by their GAI scores, after
participating in the faith-based treatment program?

Results
Bivariate linear regression analysis was used to test if the number of self-reported
experiences of racial discrimination significantly predicted participants' anxiety about the
future. The results of the regression indicated the predictor explained 36% of the variance
(R2 =.36, F(1,10)=5.06, p=.051). It was found that number of experiences of racial
discrimination does not significantly predicted anxiety about the future (β = .49, p=.051).
As illustrated in Figure 1, there is no clear discernable linear relationship between the two
variables.

A main effect of age group was found for object permanence, F(2, 25) = 9.4, p <
.01. Pairwise comparisons of the means using Tukey’s Honestly Significant Difference
procedure indicated that infants in the nine-month age group (M = 3.89) showed
significantly (p < .01) less object permanence than the infants in the fifteen-month age
group (M = 9.10).

Results
As illustrated in Figure 1, most of the students preferred Instagram and Tik-Tok
over Facebook. A chi-square test of goodness-of-fit was performed to determine whether
the three social media platforms were equally preferred among students. It was
determined that preference for the three platforms was not equally distributed, X2(2, N =
40) = 15.05, p = .001.
