Research Critique for Media Presentation
The broadcast media employs research in various ways, including radio, television, and
podcasts. A podcast called "Crime Junkie," which I like to listen to, will be the source of my
research. In this podcast, various crime-related incidents are discussed, including murder cases
and missing person cases. The discussion will focus on a specific case of serial murder. An
interview with Ed Kemper, a serial killer.
In what areas were questions addressed?
It was 1972, when female college students started turning up dead in Santa Cruz,
California, in horrific ways, and local police had no leads into who was committing these
murders. Citizens were warned to use common sense and be aware of their surroundings by the
police. They were puzzled as told to commit such horrendous crimes. Ed Kemper called the
police after committing murder and told them of what he had done (Flowers & Prawat, 2020)
Reliability challenges
The consistency with which variables in a research project are measured is referred to as
reliability (Crawford, 2019). Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawatdo, the hosts, did an excellent job of
summarizing instances and supplying background information on their sources. The problem
with their materials is that they are not scholarly publications. Resources about this case are
trustworthy. They cite many newspapers, all known to be unreliable sources of information.
Newspaper reporters may show extreme prejudice and only present the stories they choose to
present. Websites that end in.org are also used as sources. Those websites are representatives of
organizations or foundations, and the material may be slanted to suit their goals (Crawford,
2019).
Research Method
2
The researcher used archival research to gather the information for this podcast, which
involved examining existing documents publicly accessible (Crawford, 2019). Flowers and Brit
bought a video of Ed Kemper describing the circumstances and methods of these crimes.
Conclusion
Ed Kemper was sentenced to eight consecutive life terms of imprisonment with the
possibility of parole. Despite multiple parole hearings, he has turned them down because he
knows he is not safe in the world. (Flowers & Prawat, 2020). Long ago, it was said to the people,
"You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be judged". (Matthew 5:21 NIV)
