Humans are driven by a variety of motivations, values, and purposes. We each find
motivation in different ways, which can be broadly classified into intrinsic and extrinsic
categories. Our conscious and unconscious drives influence our behavior. "Motives are closely
tied with emotions" (George et al., 2020, p. 206). Values and purpose play crucial roles in
shaping our motivational experiences. Values are the silent, unexpressed motivations that power
our internal energy, enhancing motivation. Purpose can be distilled into what we contribute to the
world and what we receive from it, and these aspects determine whether our motivations are
intrinsic or extrinsic.
The primary distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation lies in the source of
motivation. Intrinsic motivation is driven by the internal pleasure and freedom one feels from
engaging in an activity for its own sake. It's about finding excitement and enjoyment in what you
do, leading to personal satisfaction. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is fueled by external
rewards. This involves doing something to achieve gratification, pleasure, social recognition, or
other benefits. When performing a task successfully, a person may enter a competitive mindset
where both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations can influence their actions.
In my situation, I deeply value my education and academic performance. I am committed
to excelling at Liberty, where the integration of religion into education is more prevalent
compared to many other institutions. At most schools, religious topics are rarely discussed,
making it a unique opportunity to gain a biblical perspective at Liberty.
My goal is to become a religious counselor, helping others recognize God's presence,
especially during their most challenging times. I value education not just for obtaining a degree,

but for fostering my relationship with God through learning. I aim to incorporate biblical truths
and understanding into my future career, motivating me to perform to the best of my abilities.
I hold myself to high standards and strive to achieve excellent grades, despite various
distractions that may impede my study time. Valuing my potential impact in spreading God's
word and assisting others drives me to remain focused and motivated in pursuing my goals.
In conclusion, "motivation is used to assign responsibility for actions" (George et al.,
2020, p. 206). People possess both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, each serving distinct
purposes and values. These variations influence how individuals perceive and navigate their
lives. A person's unique combination of motivation, values, and purpose shapes their worldview
and approach to life.
