Being the Professor
It’s unique that we all learn in our own way, our brains develop things
differently when learning. We all have a process we go through when imprinting something on
our brain. Our textbook tells us “Learning is difficult to assess because it cannot be observed
directly; instead, inferences are made about learning based on changes in performance.” In order
to get the most out of what we’re learning is to study, which is never easy, we all have different
strategies that allow us to focus but there are many ways to make it easier. The younger we learn
to study is best since we know how it works at a young age you develop that routine throughout
high school and college. There are variety of study tips, this doesn’t mean you must change what
you’re doing but getting out of bad habits is very important.
One major study tip that has helped me improve is being intentional when taking
notes. When reading each page in textbooks, have side flashcards and take notes, be careful to
write the notes in a way your brain will catch up quickly and allow it to make sense. Having key
points is necessary and helps with tests and quizzes when you have to study. When taking notes
the whole point is allowing your brain to memorize it, so taking notes that aren’t messy and easy
to understand will become beneficial in the long run. The textbook states “The importance of
individual differences among learners’ rests partly on the fact that new learning is often highly
dependent upon previously acquired knowledge and skills.” We can all use old skills into new
skills by improving which then blocks out your regular bad habits.
Another common bad habit that we are all guilty of is thinking multitasking is a
necessary step when studying. Don’t convince yourself that you need to be listening to music or
watching a movie, because you will easily lose track of your reading and notes. Being
intentional will only become a good habit, because then you won’t mess up or become bored. Its

good every once in a while to just turn off your phone and go into a quiet place where you can
just think and not let anything else distract you. This ‘study time’ also goes into time
management which is so important, sometimes I complain I didn’t get enough time in my day to
do school but I was really just lacking. When you limit yourself with a couple hours of
intentional studying you get more time of your day and more out of what you’re reading. Now
you know you’re going to get way more out of your textbook than you thought within just these
simple steps.
