Dr. Garzon defines “Christian spirituality focuses on cultivating an intimate
relationship with Jesus Christ that progressively transforms one’s values,
sense of purpose, beliefs, and lifestyle in the context of the faith
community (2011).' Dr. Watts defines Christian spirituality as a “relational
spirituality” (2000, p. 320). Secular therapists can provide thoughtful
attention and respect to a Christian client.' Dr. Watts is clear that a
client’s spirituality greatly impacts/influences sessions as their values are
based on their relationship with God, others, the world, and self (2000).'
Acceptance is a basic view of therapists in relation to clients related to
spirituality however this may be challenging if the therapist identifies as
Christian and the client identifies with begin Muslim, Hindu or another
religion.' On the other hand, a secular therapist may not understand the
dynamics and importance of the Trinity in relation to their relationship
with God which client may not receive any benefit in the counseling
process. 'Dr. Watts describes people as created in God’s image with
spiritual growth being rooted in the Bible that deepens our relationship
with God, people in our faith community and others (2000).' '
As I reflect in my own journey as a secular mental health counselor,
asking clients about their spirituality/religion and how this impacts their
daily walk, has been a game changer for my clients.' When I have opened
the door for the counselees to speak freely about their faith and the
impact/importance of during the healing process, the sessions appear to
have more meaning to the client.' Taking this course and the others to
obtain my certificate in Pastoral Counseling has been encouraging as I
navigate from being a secular provider to a Christian mental health
provider.
