Integration of spirituality and psychology incounseling
The scholarly article “Disconnection, Depression, and Spirituality: A Study
of the Role of Spirituality and Meaning in the Lives of Individuals with
Severe Depression” is premised on the observational study of the
contribution of spirituality and meaning among 15 candidates who were
afflicted by chronic depression. The most significant research question of
this study is that what the effect of religious perspective is on the pain of
depression. The evident areas of concern were:
Depression makes a perception of sacred detachment.
Spirituality take part in a salient role in getting along with the
suffering of depression
There prevails a deep longing for a sense of meaning and an
endeavor to comprehend one’s pain.
Coming to accept one’s conditions and one’s depression at some
level aids in alleviating the process.
The findings of the study showed that most members considered
depression as an important factor in disengaging them from God and
themselves. Moreover, they believed that depression was included in the
Divine’s grand design for their destiny. In addition to that, the perception
of healing was deeply associated with their potential to come to terms
with their depression which could lead us to the interconnection between
healing and spirituality.
Most individuals attained a sense of absolute consonance with themselves
after accepting the whole dis-ease process. At some point, they were able
to see the reality of themselves that comprised of natural evil, pain, and
loss. Striving is not required to neutralize the non-traditional within
themselves.
Thus, in conclusion, this study showed that the thinking process of the
individuals who suffer from chronic depression made them feel set apart
from the normal. However, the awareness of this thinking process could
act as a force to move towards the norm which triggers a high level of
self-consciousness driving them toward greater engrossment with
standards.1(Sorajjakool, Aja, Chilson, Ramírez-johnson, & Earll, 2008)
