Abstract
This counselor chose Bruce from the case study of Crossroads because of so many fathers
loosing their sons to the streets. The solution-based, short-term pastoral counseling (SBSPC)
was used to assist Bruce in navigating his way to stability for himself and his family. During our
initialed interview, the counselor demonstrate fit and Bruce invited the counselor into his space
and a bond of trust was established. The counselor implemented the distinctive features in the
SBSPC strategy using all four phases during the counseling process. The counselor will cite
numerous resources as it relates to aiding Bruce in his quest to unify his family.

Introduction
"The Murakamis are an upper middle-class family who live in a single-family home in the
suburbs of a prosperous midsize city in California. Bruce and Cindy are the parents of two sons
(Josh, 19 and Brody, 15) and an adopted daughter (Chelsea, 11). They are a Christian family
who is active in church, known as a caring family by those who know them best. Bruce is the
owner of the Murakami Construction Company. The economic state of affairs force Bruce to
focus on getting and maintaining contracts so that his crews not only stay busy, but have a steady
income for the care of their families". The result of his financial responsibility, Bruce spends
less time with his family. Fortunately, Bruce wife Cindy has a good relationship with the children
which allows for a healthy family environment. Bruce received good news regard additional
funding for his project and proceeded to the job sight to inform his employees. Cindy and
Chelsea were on their way to the Mall when their vehicle was hit by a driver drag racing on the
street (Crossroads 2013).
Bruce was devastated after realizing that his wife and daughter were killed and wanted
desperately to bring the perpetrator to justice. The police arrested and charged an eighteen-year-
old (Justin Gutierrez) with the accident. Bruce became emotionally upset when Gutierrez

plead not guilty to the charged. Gutierrez later recanted and took responsibility for the crime,

John 8:14 states, “Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not
believe me?” Bruce was advised by son Josh and best friend of the family Melissa to seek
counseling from the church concerning his relationship with his youngest son Brody.
The Prophetess/Pastor of Kingdom Builder International Ministry assigned Bruce case to me
with great urgency. I initially pray before tackling any situation, and immediately scheduled and
appointment for Bruce Murakami. The counselor will follow the academic and practical training
that he received at Liberty University, F.A.I.T.H. for SBSPC (Liberty University, 2013, p.1).
Phase One Purpose: Getting The Care-Seeker's Present Story (Session One)
Goal: Allow Bruce to describe in detail the full portrait of the problem.

Chief Aim: To be very attentive to Bruce story and respond correctly.
Role/Responsibility: The counselor will gradually establish rapport and demonstrate fit as the
counselee vented with detail of his life problem. The counselor should have ears and patients
like an elephant and with great anticipation concerning Bruce's story.
Guiding Assumption(s)? I would try the spirit by the spirit initially to see if God is already
active in Bruce's life (Kollar, 2011, p. 85-86). According to Kollar, 2011, p.85-86, the counseling
relationship is positional. Initially, Bruce was in the blaming business, however, his position
changed when the perpetrator was convicted by God to tell the truth. Bruce entered the first
session as a willing participant to save his family. Bruce initialed style was dominant because he
was the matriarchy (D/I/C) of his house, this style thinks he knows best (Carbonell, 2008, p.
180).
The counselor believes there would be no conflict with Bruce due to his ability to
communicate well and not allow to lose control but keep it in control (Uniquleyyou.com, 2014).
The counselor noticed the change in Bruce personality when he entered the house of the Lord, it
went from being impatient to patient and from leading to following (Carbonell, 2008, p.181).
This counselor believes his D/C/I/S is well balance to the point of adjusting to Bruce's sudden
personality change. Appling Petersen's Talker Listener Card (TLC) (p. 55-64) which guides
conversation with goals. It is time for the

counselor to recess and take inventory (review) his meeting with Bruce (Clinton and Hawkins,
(2009). When Bruce explained his whole story and his reason for being here, I listen with bated
breath and commended Bruce on forgiving Gutierrez, and responded immediately to his son's cry
for help, I saw the love working in him to fix the problem. I knew I was fervently invite into
Bruce's life.
Phase Two Purpose: Develop The Care-Seeker's Preferred Story/Solution (Session Two)
Goal: Goal description and formulation for Bruce.
Chief Aim: To allow the counselor and Bruce to collaborate well.
Role/Responsibility: The counselor builds rapport/demonstrates fit and the counselee sets
the direction and counselor assure that his goals are attainable.
Guiding Assumption(s)? "The counselee is not the problem, the is (Kollar, 2011, p. 77-80);
"The counselee is the expert and defines goals" (p. 72--75);"Solutions are co-created" (p.76-
77). Bruce has a strong personality, and it is pertinent that the right questions is pose to Bruce
and allowing him to feel that he is in control of his life, Bruce continue to move forward and is
very optimistic concerning his life. He is conversing in future tense regarding his life without
the problems. Bruce is the best expert about Bruce and we must continue to create, collaborate,
and reinforce that within Bruce. The counselor must continue to demonstrate fit throughout

Phase Three Purpose: Clarify and Execute Action Plan (Session Three)
Goal: Vision Clarification
Chief Aim: Execute well
Role/Responsibility: Counselor builds rapport/demonstrates fit>Counselor and Counselee
actively participate in building hope and supporting forward progress.
Guiding Assumption(s)? "Complex problems do not demand complex solutions" (Kollar,
2011, p. 67-69); "Finding exceptions helps create solutions" (p. 69-70).
The counselor in Phase Three would reiterate to the counselee purpose and goals setting, and
get a clear picture on where the counselee destiny is going. As we co-create goals, increments
steps of change in his life will emerge. The counselor will pose questions to the counselee of
what his life would be like now when he take certain steps. Bruce is in a willing position and is
eager to reunite his family to avoid further calamity to the family. The counselor saw forward
progress in Bruce behavior when he heard about how Brody was feeling from his son Joshua, he
immediately stopped what he was during and went to comfort his son and seek help from the
church pastoral staff.

As a series of questions is administered to Bruce, the counselee will assist him in the (Kollar,
2011), clarification, describing his goals, clarify the goals, formulating his goals, and scaling the
goals with follow up questions. Questions taken from Steve de Shazer (1988), "What if tonight
while you are sleeping this passage of Scripture came true for you? During the night a miracle
occurred and the problems that brought you here to speak with me are solved. But you were
sleeping, so you are not aware that this miracle has occurred. Tomorrow morning when you wake
up, what will you notice that will tell you that this miracle has happened". Remember now,
Bruce has experience a great lost, the counselor must be care not to cause a relapse.
In Kollar (2011), describing the goals, several follow up questions will come after the story
(examples):
What will you be doing if you were not working all the time?
What activities will you be doing with your son(s)?
What family activities will you be doing?
The counselor will continue to encourage Bruce spiritually concerning Christ in his life, and
giving him scriptures regarding God rest on the Sabbath day (Genesis 2:2); 7Exodus 33:14, "My
presence will go with you and I will give you rest"; 8Leviticus 24:4, “But in the seventh year
there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall not sow
your field
Or prune your vineyard.”; and 9Psalm 62:1-2, "My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation
comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be
shaken.” The counselor chief aim is to execute a well lay plan that he and the counselee

formulated/co-created together. The counselor's role and responsibility is always professional,
respectful, cordial, and always lead by the Holy Spirit.

rather than hinder the change that the Spirit is planning. The church counselor has God's Spirit to

counseling is a sacred moment when one spirit touches another, supporting faith and emotional
growth".

This counselor viewed Bruce to be according to Carbonell an active and task oriented and
active people oriented (D/I), however, I also see Bruce as a God-fearing man who respects
authority. Bruce is a willing participant, and as long as Bruce continue to progress in the right
direction that he creates, the end results is heavenly.
The counselor believes that his oppositions with Bruce would be separating him from his
work and giving more of himself to God and family. If the counselee reaches the level of
hopelessness or cynical, Kollar (2011) states, "At such time, the counselor wants to maintain fit
with the counselee. It is of little use to head off in one direction when the counselee is going
another. We want to preserve this agreement with the counselee, mourning, when necessary, with
those who mourn (rom. 12:15)". The counselor will used managing questions to keep things from
getting worse or hindering progress already made.
Clinton & Hawkins (2009), cites several points to aid in pastoral counseling. The counselor
portrait of the counselee will enable him to approach the issue from the right angle and to keep
the rapport flowing smoothly. The counselee will define his approach with a clear understanding

of the counselee struggles. An assessment is conducted to rule out any need for a physician or
any other professional need. Seeking wise counsel in assisting me with the counselee will assure
me a clear understanding in solving the care seeker problems that lies before me. The counselor
will implement a strong action plan to prevent the counselee from diverting on another course.
God is the center of our lives and his direction in completing the assignment for both the
counselor and the counselee are impossible without His intervention.
Peterson J. C., (2015), states that "If people really don't want to talk about it" (resisting), their
lost (Bruce) because of great pain, I would ease into it gently and allow his behavior to dictate if
he want me to share his grief." In regards to the counselee attitude obstruction, the counselor
would use supportive feedback techniques or core skills if applicable. The counselor will
recognize the counselee level of spirituality and use scriptures to keep the train on track moving
forward.
Phase Four: Connect Care-seeker to the Community (Session Four)
Goal: Consolidate and support the changes/progress Bruce is making.
Chief Aim: Connect well with Bruce, do not regress.
Role/Responsibility: Bruce will commits to a community of accountability directed at
preferred story during and after the process of dishabituation of unhealthy patterns and re-

habituation of healthy patterns. Counselor reinforces commitment to change through
supportive feedback and by arranging accountability through pastoral care and small group
ministries in soul-care context.
Guiding Assumption: "The counselee is always changing" (Kollar, 2011, p. 70-72).
This counselor will continue to support, co-create, and formulate in his latter stage. Bruce
personal performance will be monitored increments by increments along the way (Kollar, 2011).
As Bruce chapter come to a close, the counselor will connect Bruce to a local church within
the community. Kollar states, "the believer is to grow within the community of the local church,
where there is accountability to others and for others, along with acceptance." (p. 20). I want to
add, Proverbs 11:14, Without wise leadership, a nation is in trouble; but with good counselors
there is safety. Proverbs 24:6, For through wise counsel you will wage your war, and victory lies
in an abundance of advisors. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build
each other up as you are already doing.
This counselor knows that small groups in the church and community are essential in assisting
Bruce in his walk with Christ and a healthy family life. In these type of groups, Bruce

suggest to Bruce trying one or more different groups, teenage parenting, and bereavement or
widowed. Long (2011), harp about leaders of any groups should be professionally trained to
avoid any problems to group participants.
Conclusion
As Pastoral Counselor, we must be cognizance that God always has a plan and a way of escape for
everyone. When tragedy beseech any family, it affects everyone in that immediate household. Bruce's
family was fortunate enough to have all the resources at his disposal to help bring his runaway train to a
quiet resting place. Pastoral Counselor needs the proper training and guidance by leadership, and must
always be led by the Holy Spirit when taking on the responsibilities to battle that Spirit who came to kill,
still, and destroy.
