Using the "Conducting a Political Environment Scan" found in this week's readings,
outline what is necessary for the DNP nurse to assist in reforming one of these policies?"
Nurse practitioners (NPs) advocate on behalf of individuals for their position and
profession and the betterment of social and healthcare policy. Despite their busy schedules, all
NPs can participate in political activism in some capacity. Political participation necessitates the
development of political competence in NPs. Political competency entails employing diverse
techniques, viewpoints, and ideals that are required for effective political engagement (American
Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2014).
Learning how to find and use health policy resources will help the NP progress toward
greater political maturity. If NPs want to bring their expertise and experience to policy tables and
conversations, they must be politically competent. The NP voice is critical in the conversation
about transforming our country's healthcare system, securing NPs' role in healthcare delivery,
and influencing health determinants (AANP, 2014). Aside from the numerous resources
available, NPs should not overlook the importance of communication, active listening, consensus
and team building, and strategic planning in becoming politically influential (Chiu,+2020).
It is a strategic decision to choose a legislator with whom to communicate. Before
speaking, the NP should do their homework and familiarize themselves with policymakers'
interests and viewpoints. The goal of starting communication is to tell legislators about an issue
and ask them and their staff to take action on it, such as signing on as a co-sponsor to a piece of
legislation (Perry & Emory,+2017).
Visiting a lawmaker is an effective strategy since it allows the NP to create trust and
respect. Building these connections can assist NPs in gaining access to resources when they are
needed. The NP must rapidly and effectively address all of the significant points on the health
policy problem once they meet a lawmaker (Taylor,+2016).
How has social media influenced your professional practice?"
Nurses can use social media to connect with colleagues in the same field
worldwide and share their knowledge and experiences. Meetings and conferences that might
otherwise be time-consuming and costly can now be attended online. Not only can social
media aid in the flow of ideas and information, but it also aids in the job search (Jackson et al.,
2014). Social media can provide emotional and practical assistance when faced with
challenges by allowing professionals to share placement and practical experience with other
student nurses to solve professional concerns. Nursing students can efficiently express their
views and comments on blogs, which are established to communicate information by one
individual or an organization (Jackson et al., 2014).
Discuss the most impactful social media experience (positive or negative) including the
most valuable lessons learned from expanding professional knowledge in this area. "
+ + +The most impactful social media experience as a nurse is that I can get
information for my workplace or personal lives, interact with colleagues, share best practices,
and use personal and professional ways to improve health outcomes.
