HEAD, NECK, AND LYMPH
•Two neck muscles:
1. Sternomastoid- head rotation/flexion, each side divided into
anterior and posterior triangles.
2. Trapezius- moves shoulders, extends and turn head.
•Lymphatic System :
-No lymph nodes in the brain or placenta
- Hodgkin’s: rare, cancer in lymph
-Nonhodgkin’s: associated with abdominal and chest pain
-Mononucleosis: enlarged spleen
-Retropharyngeal abscess : infection in back of throat, airway starts to close
(medical emergency)
-Rheumatoid Arthritis : Autoimmune
- Cat scratch fever : red streaks and swollen lymph nodes
-AIDS: CD count of 200 is progression to HIV
-Lymphedema: swelling of lymph vessels

Headache:
•More common in females, Caucasian and Hispanic
•Leading cause of acute pain
•Chronic if lasts more than 15 days per month
•Concerned if:
1. Complaints of headache and never had one before
2. Patient says it’s the worst headache of their life (thunderclap)
3. Onset at 50 or older
4. Headache with hypertension
Abnormal Findings:
•Hydrocephalu s- bulging at back of head
•Plagiocephaly - flat back of the head
•Craniosynostosis - suture lines fuse too early (fixed with helmet)
•Atopic facies - chronic allergies
•Allergic salute and crease - allergies, child wipes nose up creating a
crease.
•Congenital torticollis - neck not upright
Abnormal Facial Features Associated with Chronic Illnesses:
•Cushing Syndrome : increase in ATCH or steroid use, moon face
•Bell’s Palsy : paralysis of facial nerve
•Parkinson : disconnected look
•Cachectic appearance : extreme underweight and malnourished (easier
to palpate and inspect)
