a. The right mainstem bronchus is wider and straighter than the left, which makes
aspiration of food, liquids, or other objects more likely to occur on the right side.
3. Describe the tripod position and what type of patients are more likely to demonstrate
this position for breathing?
a. Patients would sit down while leaning forward with their arms resting on their
knees or stand with their arms resting on another surface such as a table to
help relieve their distress.
b. Patients that are having respiratory distress go into this position to expand
their ribs and improve oxygenation
4. What is the AP diameter of a typical healthy
person? a. 15-27
5. What is the typical respiratory rate? What is the term used for fast, rapid breathing and
what is the rate? What is the term used for slow breathing, and what is the rate?
a. 12-20 breaths
