Nursing Theorists
Nursing as a profession has been in demand and evolving over the years. There was a time it did
not have the popularity as it has in the modern world. Over the years, different researchers have
contributed to the evolution of nursing which have made it better in teaching and practice. Each
researcher contributed unique content that they studied for years and now form basic guidelines
of modern nursing both in education and in practice. In this paper, the theorist that will be
studied is Virginia Henderson. The paper will discuss her contribution to modern nursing and
explain why she was chosen for this evaluation.
Nursing Theories
How do nursing theories integrate the concepts of person, environment, health, and
nursing practice?
Nursing theories serve as the foundation for nursing practice by providing a framework to
understand and guide the delivery of care. These theories often integrate the concepts of person,
environment, health, and nursing practice, recognizing their interconnectedness and influence on
each other. In this response, we will explore how nursing theories integrate these concepts,
emphasizing their significance in shaping the nursing profession.
Person-centered care is a fundamental aspect of nursing theories, highlighting the importance of
recognizing and respecting the unique needs, values, beliefs, and experiences of individuals
receiving care. Nursing theories acknowledge that each person is an individual with subjective
experiences and perceptions of health and illness. This recognition leads to a focus on holistic
care that addresses the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of a person's well-
being. By considering the person as an active participant in their own care, nursing theories
promote collaboration and shared decision-making between healthcare providers and patients.
The environment plays a crucial role in nursing theories, encompassing the physical, social,
cultural, and economic contexts in which individuals live. Nursing theories recognize that the
environment can influence a person's health and well-being, either positively or negatively. For
example, a supportive and safe environment can promote healing and recovery, while a stressful
or hazardous environment can hinder health outcomes. Nursing practice guided by these theories
emphasizes creating a conducive environment that promotes optimal health, such as through
infection control measures, safe patient handling techniques, and environmental modifications to
accommodate individual needs.
