National Alliance on Mental Illness
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a mental health organization established to
build better lives for the many American citizens affected by mental illness. These include
illnesses such as Borderline Personality Disorder, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder,
schizophrenia, psychosis, suicide, sleep disorders among others. Founded in 1979, NAMI has
grown into one of the largest mental organizations in the United States with over 500 local
affiliates working with various communities to raise awareness. In addition, these affiliates offer
support as well as education that was historically not available for individuals affected by mental
illnesses.
Education- NAMI offers education about mental health to thousands of communities across the
U.S. Noteworthy, this achieved through NAMI's numerous state organizations and affiliates who
are mandated with implementation of educational programs to ensure that all the needy families
and individuals are supported with the information they need.
Advocate-"NAMI shapes national public policy for people with mental illness and their families
and provides volunteer leaders with the tools, resources, and skills necessary to save mental
health in all states" (NAMI, 2019).
Leadership- NAMI provides leadership in the fight stigma associated with mental illness. For
instance, NAMI runs the Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMI Walks to raise awareness
about mental health and dispel some of the negative stereotypes and myths held against those
