Germany
In today's paper, we are going to be talking about Germany. Germany is a very festive country
with many diverse cultures and beliefs. Germany's history is about as good as it gets, Germany is made
up of sixteen different regions and each one of those regions has an extremely diverse and different type
of culture. During the war, a lot of German cultures were wiped out for years that the war went on and
because of the war most people were forced to believe in one thing and a lot of the different
backgrounds and cultures died out. After the war was over all those diverse cultures and traditions came
back and Germany now embraces those cultures every chance they get. Germany has a lot of different
religions and beliefs depending on where you go, the most common of those beliefs is Judaism,
Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Yazidi. Each one of these different religions has a very different
background and with those backgrounds comes extremely unique music and dances. The person I will be
interviewing for this paper is my dad, John Schuttloffel. my dad grew up in America, but his mom was
from Germany and moved to America after the war his dad was in the war and that's where my grandma
and grandpa met each other. They got married and came back to America to live, even though my dad
grew up in America with his mom being from Germany his household had some very German traditions
as well. My grandmother to this day still has the thickest German accent I have ever heard in my life even
though she has lived in America for decades. Growing up my dad was raised in a Catholic household, but
he had some German traditions like Lederhosen. My Dad has been to Germany multiple times since he
has grown up and said that some of the traditions that they did growing up were very familiar to him
when he would go visit the country.
Q and A
Question. What was the most memorable German tradition growing up?
Answer. Going to the beer gardens and Octoberfest.
Question. Where did you witness the most German traditions?
Answer. There were a lot of dances and songs that would be performed in the beer gardens that were all
over Germany and on Octoberfest there were plenty of traditional German dances and songs that were
sung.
Question. Where was your favorite place to go in Germany?
Answer. Munich Germany was my favorite place to go period
Questions. What was your favorite part about Germany?
Answer. The food and the drinks.
Question. What was it like growing up in a more German household.
Answer. It was very interesting it wasn't super different from growing up in a normal household but
there was a lot more traditions that we had and some of the clothing that we had was not normal for a
normal American household and was very traditional to Germans even though we didn't wear these
clothes all the time but we still had them because it was part of my mom's culture and now my culture
too.
Question. What were some of the cloths you had that where German
Answer. When I was little and growing up, I had a pair of lederhosen.
Question. What were some of the instruments that you remember being used to perform some of the
songs and music that you experienced when you would go to German festivals?
Answer. The most memorable instrument when I would go to Germany is the accordion because it was
pretty much used in every German dance and song that you would experience in Germany. There were
also other instruments that I remember like the cello and the tuba were also very common over there.
Question. Was there any specific dances or songs that you remember that were very popular in
Germany?
Answer. German folk songs and dances were by far the most popular ones I remember and they would
be performed at every event that I attended and during Oktoberfest they were in extremely popular way
too express German traditions through a song and a dance, the people performing these songs and
dances would have elaborate outfits on, these outfits would be usually green white and red outfits that
were really colorful.
Question. Were there any stories you remember from German culture?
Answer. The first one that comes to mind is the story of the Struwwelpeter which was about a monster
that would take your thumbs if you sucked on them, it was more of a story to get kids to stop sucking on
their thumbs.
Question. Did you play any instruments that were related to German culture?
Answer. I did not play any instruments at all, but your grandmother played a couple of instruments, I
don’t remember the names of them.
Question. What part of growing up in a partially German household was noticeably different?
Answer. I think the biggest thing when it came to growing up in a partially German household was, we
had a lot of German food for dinner that wouldn't typically be made in a regular American household.
Question. Was it difficult growing up in a more German household seeing that most of the people
around you like your friends were not raised in a German household?
Answer. No it wasn't difficult at all because my dad was not German so there was a very good balance of
German culture and American culture and I think that all my friends thought it was kind of unique the
way we would do certain things but seeing that I had that mix of both cultures it made it very easy to fit
into both cultures as well.
Music analysis one
Our first music analysis, we're going to be looking at a German folk song Called Gloried
Quintett. The song starts off with four people on the side of a mountain playing different instruments.
You can tell that it is a German song because of the way they are dressed and the setting of the scene.
They are on a mountain with a very beautiful background with trees flowers and a river flowing through
the background. All four of the men are dressed in very German outfits they all look like they're wearing.
All four of the men have their different instruments in each of their hands one looks like he's playing
accordion while another one is playing the tuba there is also one playing the trumpet a flute is being
played as well and also a guitar.
The video starts off with them playing all their instruments at once and an upbeat tone,
shortly after all four of the guys in the video start singing German I can't understand what
they're saying because I don't speak German but I can tell that is a very happy and upbeat song
from the expressions on their face and the way they are singing all four of the men seem to be
extremely happy during the song.
Concepts
The concepts of this video show that it's supposed to be a happy and upbeat video because you
can tell by the way they're singing how there is not a dull part in the song, and everything is very fast
tempo and upbeat. I think this song might be used during a German festival or something to celebrate. I
think this song could be used to dance to and just have a good time with your friend’s karma the song
sounds virtually the same throughout the entire video and there's not a moment in the song where it
slows down or dulls.
Sounds
The sound of this song is very happy all the different instruments used in the song really give it a
very nice sound. the German singing adds an element to this song too that I think is just great, the
sounds of this song expressed joy and happiness and I think all the instruments used in this song just
really play a great role and expressing all these different emotions.
Behavior
The behavior in this video was very happy it reminded me of something that you would dance to
at the festival. The clothes they were wearing showed the German tradition. The scenery that they were
in throughout the video also showed a very German aspect to the video, they also visited with some
other people in the video, and they were all playing the accordion together and enjoying the music and
dancing. Overall, the behavior of this video was very happy and upbeat.
Music analysis 2
The next song we looked at was the German polka song. This song was being performed at some
sort of festival. There was a big audience of people gathered around a bunch of dancers on a dance floor.
All these people were dancing to the polka music that was being played. The people playing the music
look like they were very familiar with what they are doing because of the way they were dressed and
how they were playing their instruments. The tourists enjoying the music all looked very intrigued and
interested. Most of the people around the dance floor danced eating food and drink.
Concepts
The concept of this video is that the song in the video main purpose is to be used for a polka
dance, the song is an upbeat happy song which makes it easier to dance to, also the song has a good
beat to it which makes it easier for the people dancing along to follow along with the song. I think
another concept of the song is that it is supposed to be used at festivals when celebrating because of the
way it is more of a happy song.
Sounds
The sounds of the song are very fast-paced and upbeat. There is an accordion being played as
probably the main centerpiece of the instruments in this song, there's also a trumpet and a flute being
played in the song. The crowd is clapping along to the song adding another element to the noise. The
people dancing is also tapping and clicking their heels which adds a whole new aspect to the song.
Behavior
The behavior in the video represents the dance being performed in the video perfectly. Everyone
seems to be having a good time and dancing around and having fun, the outfits in the video represent
German culture perfectly, they are very colorful and traditional to German culture. The dance performed
in the video has been performed multiple times by the people in the video because they're all on the
same page and it is planned in the way they are moving around and leaving in and out of each other
perfectly.
Music analysis 3
The last song we were going to look at here is another German folk song. This German folk song
starts with the trumpet playing the setting is a mountain range with a lake in front of the mountain range
and multiple trees and woodland all around. as the song goes on a German singer joins in and begins to
sing in a very soft and soothing manner, there's also an accordion being played and a trumpet, a cello,
and a tuba. All these instruments that are being played in the song are being played very slowly and the
song overall has a more relaxing beat period
Concepts
I feel like this song’s main purpose is to tell people about Germany they gave a translation into
English in the song and a lot of the lyrics talked about how Germany was the man who was singing home
and there's no other place as beautiful as it. I think this song it's just describing how wonderful Germany
is and how beautiful the land and the culture are.
Sounds
As for the sounds and the song they are very soothing and subtle. This song doesn't so much
strike me as a song that would be used for dance and more of a song that would be used to tell a story or
describe a place, the instruments in the song are all playing very mellowly and the singing from the
singer is very soothing and soft.
Behavior
The behavior of this song is very relaxing the man in the song singing he's very mellow and chill
and the scenery all around just depicts a more calming setting. The river and the mountain in the
background and the lake all give off a very relaxing vibe, this song is more of a feel-good song to make
you feel like you are somewhere you belong like home.
Overall, in this paper what I've learned is that German culture is very unique from the music the
songs the dances and the food everything has its purpose and is very impressive. I think the outfits that
they wear when they are performing dances and the dances that they do are one of the most unique
things about Germany’s culture and from talking to my dad I think that the food is also a huge staple in
German tradition and culture. Germany is a very unique country and even though it has been through
some hard times in the past it has shown that its traditions culture and its music can never be taken
away.
