Consider Matthew 7:12. Does this verse agree with the Golden Rule? Why
or why not? Be specific and include theories found in Chapter 2.
Your Answer:
Matthew 7:12 states, "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men
should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets"
(King James Version, 2014).
Yes, this Bible verse ultimately references the "Golden Rule" that is described
in the book of Matthew. The "Golden Rule" is essentially an ethical precept
that says do unto others what you want done to you. Therefore, leaders and
managers should treat their followers as they would like to be treated. In
Chapter 2 of Satterlee (2018), I feel that Henri Fayol's four functions and
fourteen principles of management applies to the the "Golden Rule" and
Matthew 7:12. In his theory, he sets out to list the four functions of
management as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Furthermore,
his fourteen principles apply to all areas of management and followers
because it address the simplest and most complex principles of leadership
and management. Therefore, making Fayol the "father of modern
management" (Satterlee, 2018, p. 35). Fayol covered everything from
division of work to esprit de corps. Fayol's fourteen principles apply to the
leader, followers, and the organization and strive to make things balanced
within the organization. Therefore, the balance created follows the basis of
the "Golden Rule" because each principle holds people accountable and
promotes equality within the organization.
