DVD 5: Facilitating, Learning and Change: Advanced Coaching Skills, Georgia
Shaffer, M.A.
In this lesson, Georgia Shaffer helps you learn some advanced coaching skills. You will
also view helpful role-plays to facilitate building your advanced skills.
I. Managing Progress and Accountability
Accountability is not about nagging or shaming.
A. Defining Accountability:
Accountability is the structure by which you hold your client
responsible or accountable to what they said they would do and
when they said they would do it.
B. What to do when an Objective is not met:
1. Address the Issue— Don’t ignore or discount, use as a learning
experience. What happened? What did you learn from this that
you want to use for “next time”?
2. Discuss the “Next Time”— What worked best for you? What do
you want to be accountable for this week? How do you want to
handle it if you don’t follow through again?
Why is Accountability so important?
It gives a sense of progress and shows that they are really moving forward!
Little steps along the way to stay on track.
II. Methods of Maintaining Accountability:
A. Establish a clear understanding of Goals for the next step
*Clearly understand the goal for the nest session
-- restate it
-- write it down
--both have a copy
Email a summary of session
Have a plan – when, what, how I will know it’s done
