INQUIRY PORTFOLIO PROJECT:
FINAL SUBMISSION TEMPLATE
Name: Robbie McAbee
This course-long portfolio, developed over multiple weeks, will give you the opportunity to engage with a particular research topic
while utilizing the various steps of the inquiry process. Once you have completed each week of the project, you will compile each step
from Weeks 2-6 into this template and submit it in the link named “Inquiry Portfolio Project Final Submission”. Remember that you
are compiling previous work here, and failure to complete each step may result in failure for the assignment.
Week Two Topic Selection
Original Submission:
My topic that I am going to be researching for the duration of this class is going to be the positive and negative effects of hosting the
Olympics. This topic connects to me because I personally love watching the Olympics. I am a business in sport management major so this topic
ties in very closely to my undergraduate career. Investigating into the effects of the largest worldwide sporting event will help me to better
understand the impact sports have on their community. People concerned with this issue include countries that are interested in hosting the
Olympics in the future. They would benefit greatly from my research because they would know the negative impacts and be able to think of
solutions to avoid those impacts.
Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to start creating my topic:
My topic that I am going to be researching is benefits of hosting the Olympics versus the costs. I will be looking to see if the cities actually
benefit from hosting compared to what it costs them. This topic connects to me because I personally love watching the Olympics. I am a business
in sport management major so this topic ties in very closely to my undergraduate career. Investigating into the effects of the largest worldwide
sporting event will help me to better understand the impact sports have on their community. People concerned with this issue include countries

that are interested in hosting the Olympics in the future. They would benefit greatly from my research because they would know the negative
impacts and be able to think of solutions to avoid those impacts.
Week Three Development of Research Question
Original Submission:
My topic for research during this course is the effects of the Olympics on the host country. My research question will be, how do the
Olympics effect a host country’s economy during the events verse when the Olympics are over? I chose this question because I want to know the
long-lasting effects of the Olympics on the host country. I know that some countries do have economic struggles after the Olympics, but
sometimes the countries so very well after. This question is ethical because we have to acknowledge the harmful impacts the Olympics can leave
on a country. We shouldn’t just leave that country to deal with it on their own, we should think of different ways to limit the harmful effects. This
question is significant and pertains to my academic career because I am a sport management major. This will help me to understand the economic
impacts that sport has on parts of the world all over the globe.
Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to develop my research question:
My topic for research is the benefits of hosting the Olympics versus the cost. My research question will be, does a city that hosts an Olympic
event typically experience benefits compared to the cost of the preparation of the event? I chose this question because I want to know if it is
actually beneficial to a city to host the Olympics. This helps me in my major of sport management because I can understand how large-scale
athletic events affect the place they are hosted in.
Research Log Template – Week 4
Take notes as you search to help you remember which databases, keywords, and strategies worked the best. Your log should show
evidence of searching for various types of resources, including books and scholarly articles.

Ebsco database I used the
keywords
Olympics,
benefits, and
host. I also
applied the
peer-reviewed
filter.
407
This search brought back many good articles that provided me with
a lot of revenue related articles about the Olympics.
11/21/2021
ProQuest database I used
keywords such
as Olympics,
cost, and
hosting. I also
put on the peer-

1,166
This search resulted in a lot of peer-reviewed articles that explain
why countries like to host these events, even though they end up
costing a lot.
11/21/2021 Credo Reference
database
I searched with
the keywords
Olympics,

I was not a huge fan of this database, it does not have to option to
filter out non peer-reviewed articles, which made it challenging to
use.
11/21/2021 Business Insights Global
database
I applied the
peer-reviewed
filter. I also
used the
keywords
Olympics, cost,

3
Although this database only brought me back 3 results, they were all
articles that are very relevant to my topic.

I definitely will not be using this database as it yielded no results
for me. I learned that not all databases are going to work for me
even though they are under the business category.
11/21/2021 I searched the
SPORTDiscus database
I used the
keywords
Olympics,

This database yielded very good resources that I am likely to use in
this project. They had a lot of results that were specific to my
research question.

The keywords I
used were
Olympics,

This database did not yield the results that I wanted, they were not
specific to my research question.
11/21/2021 Emerald Insight database I searched with
the keywords
Olympics,

Searching on this database brought me back a lot of articles,
journals, and case studies. A lot of them were useful and specific to
my research question.
11/21/2021 I searched the online
catalog of books at the
Jerry Falwell Library.
I used the
keywords
Olympics,

benefits.
55,856 This search was very broad and brought back a lot of potential
books that I could use.

8,106 This was more concise, but some of the books that came up in the
search result were not relevant to my topic.
Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to begin looking for sources:
If I were to begin looking for sources again, I would not use such broad databases. The JFL provides so many databases, and a lot of them
are major specific. Using ones that are specific to your major will help you to find even better results for your research.
Week Five Process Findings
Original Submission:
Out of the two books that I chose last week, I have decided to keep the book Should Cities go for the Gold? The long-term
Impacts of Hosting the Olympics. The article that I have chosen to keep out of the two I had last week is, The Economic Benefits of Mega
Events: A Myth or a Reality? A Longitudinal Study on the Olympic Games. Both of these sources hold valuable information that directly
relates to my research topic. They will help me to further my understanding on this topic and will provide me with a lot of key research
into this area. They also provide evidence that is backed up by Olympic games from the past. The authors are credible, and both of these
sources are recent in their creation. Finding these two sources have helped me to better understand what a reliable and relevant source is.
Through this process I fell that I have become better equipped to find sources for future research projects, or even just my own research.

Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to begin critiquing my sources:
I feel as though I made good selections for my final choices out of the research I did. I am confident that if I was to research into this
question these resources would provide me with a lot of good details, and allow me to further my knowledge on this topic. The only thing
that could have changed is if I had used more specific databases in week 4 and got different more specific results.
Week Six Statement of Intent
Original Submission:
My research interest came from the course introduction to sport management. Researching this topic helps me to understand how
mega sporting events effect hosts. This helps me better understand not just mega sporting events, but all sporting events. A large part of
my major is understanding how to host sporting events, and the effects they have. I am definitely better informed on this topic, due to all
the research that I have done. In any future sport management courses, I can use what I have learned about the Olympics. Any future
projects I could build upon this topic, or I can apply it to many other areas of the major. This connects to my personal history because I
have always loved watching the Olympics. Learning about how the Olympics operate, and their long-lasting effects, has been very
interesting to me.
Now that I know what I know, this is what I would change if I were to explain my statement of intent:
I think that I explained my statement of intent well, and how it connected to my academic studies here at Liberty. I also explained how
researching this topic will help me in my future courses.
