TOPIC AND RESEARCH QUESTION TEMPLATE
Topic: The effect of running various distances per week of 14–18-year-old high school students
on perceived stress levels.
Sample: High School students aged 14-18
Independent Variable: Sorting the children in the groups of no running, low mileage per week
0.5-2.5mi), moderate mileage (2.6-7mi), and high mileage (7.1+)
Dependent Variable: Whether a higher running mileage per week results in a lower or higher
perceived stress level.
Hypothesis: High school students aged 14-18 who record moderate to high levels of running
would have lower perceived stress levels than the students who have lower or even no running
done per week.
Research Question: Will high school students, from modern/city areas aged 14-18 who record
moderate to high amounts of running mileage have lower levels of perceived stress than the
children who record lower levels of mileage?
Disciplines Incorporated:
Health Sciences
Psychology
Justification: In dealing with children and physical activity, health sciences can help to
understand the intricacies of activity and its effect on the body. Health science allows for the
reader to begin to understand how the biological effects of physical activity on the body and how
it can affect the mind and motivation of a person. Moreover, in dealing with running, health
sciences can help us to understand the effects it may have on the body and bodily functions
specifically. Additionally, understanding how psychology can show how the mind is affected by

multiple systems and things in everyday life. Moreover, using both disciplines, we can begin to
understand the effects of stress and how they intertwine with physical activity, and this will help
us understand the relationship of these and the effects on people individually, as well as together
simultaneously.
