Introduction
As a veteran law enforcement officer, communicating with random and varied members
of the public is a daily function of my job. Learning to initiate communication, resolve conflict
via communication and to negotiate a resolution to problems, often against what the other party
initially thought they wanted. This applies not only to law enforcement functions, but also to
other functions in life, business and family. Adding the business classes for that portion of my
degree field has updated my understanding and ability to implement business plans, itineraries,
schedules, conduct meetings, and to work with differing personalities. The special education
portion of my degree field has prepared me to better recognize and work with those who may not
reach a perceived societal norm.
Communication
As a law enforcement officer, a large part of my job is to communicate with people.
Contrary to popular belief, a log of what we do center around de-escalation of a situation. That
is done through good, effective communication. (Barker, Hajek, Ota, Noels, Somera & Giles,
2016) This is bolstered by the training and research that I have been tasked to perform during my
university classes. I have experience in public speaking to groups that have ranged from
receptive to openly hostile and ranging from interpersonal to several hundred people. My classes
have prepared me to prepare for these types of dealings whether they are person to person or
given to large groups. Added to this, my training and experience as a martial arts instructor has
given me the practical experience in how to communicate with people that are both looking for a
product and looking to find a new product and leave the current one.

Business
As a student of a business curriculum, I have learned many ways in which to set up, open,
maintain and grow a business. I have learned how to work through the appropriate fee’s and
licenses necessary, permits required to open a business. I have also learned how to read and
decipher leasing agreements, legal contracts and how to find the contrary issues within them.
This is a necessary and often overlooked skillset. (Joseph,2017) Add to this that I have the
aforementioned experience of being a business owner and having done this type of work. I also
run a small firearms safety company that caters to both civilian and law enforcement needs, so I
have gained the experience of dealing with these types of necessary business procedures on a
daily basis. The experience that I have gained during the execution of the duties of these two
business’ have also allowed me to learn to work with beginners that have had no experience
whatsoever, those who are intermediates with in those fields as well as experts that have both
learned from and taught me newer and better techniques of helping others to learn and how to
run a business.
Special Education
With issues such as Autism appearing more often within the framework of our society,
learning to deal with those for whom social structure and networking skills are hard to learn or
just plain nonexistence. While someone who suffers from a neurological condition may often
deter others from hiring or working with them, my training and experience has shown me the
lack of limits that these people can often exhibit. I have extensive personal experience in
working with Autistic children and teens and feel that this makes my abilities in conducting
business and communicating a level above what it would otherwise be.

Conclusion
I understand that many of the applicants for this position will be younger than I am, and
often by a significant margin. I understand that many of them will have the same classes and
educational background that I am bringing to the proverbial table. But what I bring as well is a
wealth of experience in applying that knowledge and education in a real world, real time
environment. I have spent one career dealing with the worst of our society, working within
serious constraints that change literally every year, and having to apply the concepts and
teachings of proper communication. I bring an understanding of business practices and needs
that only an experienced business owner can apply. I also bring in the experience of working
with difficult people that are often not responsible for how their reactions to stressful situations
may affect those around them. In short, though there are other applicants, I believe that I would
be the best choice for the position as I have both the educational background, training and
experience to assist your business in reaching the next level.
