Discussion Thread: Covey and Worldview
“By keeping that end clearly in mind, you can make certain that whatever you do on any
particular day does not violate the criteria you have defined as supremely important, and that
each day of your life contributes in a meaningful way to the vision you have of your life as a
whole.”
I agree with this statement in general, not just how the author is using it. Covey is saying
by keeping that end in mind, your funeral and what you want people to say about you, will help
you live out a meaningful vision you have for you life. If you go about your life trying to live up
to the things you wish people would say or feel about you, you will be sadly disappointed. We
were not created to please man. Galatians 1:10 says, “For am I now seeking the approval of man,
or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a
servant of Christ” (ESV Bible, 2007). Covey also goes on and says “how different our lives [will
be] when we really know what is deeply important to us” (Covey, 2016). I can see where he is
coming from, however I think it doesn’t necessarily add up to the Christian worldview. I think if
you try to live with the end in mind, it should be where you’re headed after your life is over and
what will be said when you face God. I do think it’s important on how you treat people and what
impressions you leave behind, but I think it’s more important to focus on what God will say to
you on judgment day. Trying to live a life that is pleasing to God is the only thing that matters.
