Human Services is a broad term that covers various careers. Within all the careers they
all share the desire to help people meet their basic needs for whatever reason cannot
be met without assistance (Martin, 2018, p.3). One thing that would be a difference with
a degree in social work is that it requires licensure. The human service profession is
needed because as humans we all have basic needs that should be met such as source
of food, clothing, shelter, and safety. Due to certain situations and circumstances that
people may face, it can affect their ability to access or maintain those needs. As a
Christian I was taught to treat others how I would like to be treated and to also help
those in need.
One career that I have been considering within the human service field is a juvenile
detention liaison because I see in my community way to many of the youth fall victim of
their circumstance and get put in detention centers or group homes and I believe that
there should be more therapeutic options available. Another career that I considered is
a veterans counselor because I know that our service men and women experience
some traumatic things and the routine of things in service are different and I would like
to help them deal with life after service.
Based on the course material from this week I consider the Jane Adams Settlement
House movement as the most important historical event in the human service
profession. Adams believed that poverty could be situational and not just in the sense of
being lazy (Martin, 2018, p.26) Ms. Addams interpersonal model of poverty relief was
not focused on personality morality or behavioral reform which was the Charity
Organization Society belief but that the disadvantaged problems was based on
problems within society.
Ms. Addams believed the faith-based organization was rather heartless. “Addams
advocated for changes within the social structure of society in order to remove barriers
to self-sufficiency, which she viewed as an essential component of a democracy”. I
believe it would be safe to say that Jane Adams paved the way for housing resources
today.
